Discussing Composition – Episode #62

Today we are answering question by Parthiv about composition. We talk about the things we keep in mind when composing a photo. Some of the techniques we talk about are the rule of thirds, in which your frame is divided by 3 vertical and 3 horizontal segments. the focal point of your image is usually placed well around the intersection of these segments. Also, putting your horizon line on the lower or upper third will keep your image from being static.

haha the ending made me laugh out loud! that was a cute sign out!

Just something I wanted to add, I usually keep my focus point on one of the “rule of third” points by default.  I find that this prevents me from defaulting to “stick the subject in the center” mode– and reminds me to think more critically about composition.

    Love the pheatured image!

I usually just use Kat’s technique on this one rather than following theories such as rule of thirds and golden mean. I just come up with a composition which goes hand in hand with the subject and the action within the image. So for example if I’m shooting a portrait, I give the subject some looking space (that’s what it’s called!) and frame according to the action. So if I’m shooting a basketball player who is just about to jump, I would place the subject at one of the lower corners of the rule of thirds.

I enjoyed this episode… particularly because i sometimes still struggle with composition. :( but this episode has made it a lot easier to understand about composition. Yay :D

Oh btw Aaron, i was wondering if i could get your support and the support of fellow PHLearners.
and if i could get your vote for a competition i’m joining. basically votes are done by rating the person’s portfolio. i would really really appreciate it. voting ends 7th JUNE 2011 at midnight.

thats a good point!  I forgot about that.  Maybe it’s because Avery isn’t back yet

Avery just got back, but now has to take care of some family time, and will be leaving again. Back again soon though, and we will announce new phlearn ideas!

A whole episode dedicated to answer my question, can’t go wrong with that. Kat, you pronounced it right the first time :) .. Thanks a lot guys for discussing composition in details. It always helps when someone talks about it rather then reading it on some webpage… If the ‘BEAUTY’ gets selected, I am def buying it …
