Today’s Episode

Today we are working on Joel’s image because he won last week’s contest! With over 140 votes, he did an awesome job.

We are covering some great techniques that will help refine your photos. Some times even fixing a few small details will make a big difference. We decided to remove much of the reflection in the glass behind the subjects to draw more attention to the people in the photo.

We also warped the image to straighten some of the lines in the background. This is totally optional, and will usually result in warping your subjects as well, so you will have to be very careful.

This Week’s Contest

We are changing a few things up with our contests to give everyone a chance to win. We have been choosing the winner based on the amount of likes a photo received. We had a lot of great participation, but we found that some people who entered later didn’t have enough time to get as many likes.

Each week we will be drawing a new contest theme, and the person who best represents the theme will win. Experience level, fancy gear, and a ton of friends are not necessary. Just some heart and a great image!

This week the theme is Silhouette!

Submit your best silhouette images for a chance to win a Phlearn PRO, and have your image edited on Phlearn!

Contest Guidelines:

How to Enter
Simply add your image to a comment below. Please only submit one image each week. You're submitting images to be edited, so don't do too much Photoshop beforehand. We want to teach not just how, but why edits are being made.

How to Win
The person who best exemplifies the contest theme will be the winner. If two entries are close, the amount of likes, comments, and a great description will be the deciding factor. Winners are chosen by the Phlearn team.

    I took this picture in 2006 New Years Eve ;) we were waiting for 1,5h on top of Smerek Mountain in Poland :) it was freezing cold but view of first rays of sun was so amazing that we forgot about cold…

One way to figure out the lighting in a photo besides looking at the direction of the shadows, is to look into the eyes and particularly the catch lights in the eyes can help you figure out the type of light used by its shape in the eye as well as the directions it was lit
