Nikon introduces fast, wide-angle to medium telephoto AF-S zoom lens optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both full frame and crop sensors. Enhanced optical formulas, engineered to produce exceptional sharpness, contrast and color, render outstanding image integrity.
This work horse of a lens will do just about everything to get you through any shoot. The large zoom range makes this lens very diverse and able to shoot landscapes, portraits, weddings, live music, conceptual photography, and pretty much anything else. It is expensive, but could serve well as the only lens in your bag. Partnered with a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8, it is an unstoppable force.
My personal experience
If your shooting conditions are constantly changing such as at a wedding or you have different multiple images to capture in a short amount of time, this lens will save you a lot of stress. Being a medium telephoto lens at 70mm, it is a bit hard to get super close to your subject, but I find it close enough for most situations. If you do end up needing to zoom in closer, the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 is a great option, giving you the same low light capabilities.
Additionally, the optics and build quality are nothing short of excellent.
Who is this lens for?
Everyone! While expensive, there are so many uses for this lens and it does them very well. This is the most practical of Nikon’s three important zoom lenses, the ultrawide 14-24mm f/2.8 and the telephoto 70-200 f/2.8.
Who isn’t this lens for?
If the extra stop of light isn’t important to you, the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 is a cheaper alternative, and it weighs less!
