HDR pt.1 – Episode # 26 Friday

HDR exposures

HDR is an amazing technique that brings with it both beauty and controversy. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range – basically it is a way to combine different exposures to compensate for a camera’s inability to capture detail across many stops of light. Done correctly it can provide amazing images, over done images usually look cartoonish. Of course it is all up to personal preference. Today we cover how to take the images necessary to make an HDR image. We go over changing exposure, and capturing many different images that will be combined to create our final HDR.

Hi hope you like it. Unfortunately it is a very famous street in the UK and it is a bit of a cliche’ now, most photographers end up taking one of these shots. But I like it :-) It was used in a famous Bread advert in the UK.

Just noticed that anyone can download / copy the images you post here. It is a shame you can’t prevent that. Hopefully no one will use our images without permission !

could you cover the best way to keep the color looking great from your computer to flickr. I notice when I put the photo on flickr or anything like it the color tends to look bland.

  • http://www.paulliebrand.com Paul Liebrand

Is it perhaps all the “white” surrounding the photo? What does it look like when you have all the black around it on Flickr? I have not noticed this problem.

  • Tealynnephotography

I found out it is actually my computer, I put the images up next to my boyfriends computer and his look much more striking and mine look bland. Maybe it’s time for an upgrade.

You should try calibrating your monitor with a colorimeter. A afforadable one is the Spider 3 express. It makes a huge difference!

  • http://www.paulliebrand.com Paul Liebrand

Might be monitor adjustments. I bought a calibration device and it made a difference.

I really love those earlier episodes of Phlearn! So many basics to show us! I love it! :)
Must try HDR some time…I sometimes see photos in HDR that I like a lot but many times I find it overdone! I guess it depends on the photo!
