Behind the Scenes, Photography, Production Jul 14 , Episode 87

Ever wonder how a Phlearn episode is made? No? Well I am going to show you anyway. I go over everything from camera settings, lighting, audio, screen recording, and compiling everything together.

Gear Used in This Episode

For simple movies you can also use a modeling light from your strobes:)

cool. I use premiere pro. Looks way more complicated than what you use. Also, this video doesn’t look HD. I was just curious. Keep up the good work!

  • Nicole

Awesome idea! I love the behind the scenes topics. More of this with your photoshoots would be great!

dope episode aaron welcome back question you ever think about using Katherine as your new co host? she did a good job in those previous episodes just a thought… keep up the good work :)

Great behind the scenes episode – If you got a clapboard or literally just clapped loudly once before speaking, you would have a huge, obvious peak on the audio waveform to sync things up when you get it all inside iMovie! I think there might even be a few slate/clapboard apps for the iPhone too…

Great Episode Aaron! Keep it up! ;) BTW I miss putting the videos together LOL brought back some memories jejejeje. And guys it may seem easy peezy here, which it is LOL, but it’s SOOOOOOO time consuming! waiting for everthing to load on the computer, editing, converting, then uploading it to Vimeo, ugh LOL I hope you all appreciate all the work it takes to make a Phlearn episode It takes a HUGE chunk of the day and it’s all for you phlearnaholics at no cost ;) Isn’t Phlearn AWESOME!!! :D

  • thepandabare

I know this is LemeLeme but can you show how to do these effects in PS? The radial blur that fades intensity and the feathering into thatching?

  • Anonymous

Love it, that would be a great episode

I’m glad you went over this. A lot goes into one Phlearn episode :)

Hi Aaron – great video.  I’ve been trying to dabble with video editing lately and this gives some good beginner insight to iMovie.  “newb “Question though:  On the H4n Audio Recorder do you need to worry about the recording frame rate setting for audio like you do with your on screen video vs. camera video?  Or does straight audio work differently?

  • Mason

Keep up the good work! I have almost all the same equipment. I can vouch that creating videos is tough and very time consuming.
Do you have an iPhone? I’ve been looking at DSLR Remote from OnOne to use while making videos too. Haven’t taken the plunge but if you do let me know how it works! (Disclaimer: I do not work for On One and not affiliated with them in any way! Just a guy that loves tech stuff and my 5dM2!)

    Doing this today!

  • Cornflake Couture

That was epic, I remember you saying they took a while to do.  Did you learn how to do this for Phlearn or was it something you already had experience of?

Joel… your photo’s are so awesome!
I don’t mind if Aaron did a episode on everyone of them ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/Daryl.Photography Daryl Charles

/Great Aaron! I’ve been waiting long for this episode. I really want to get into some videos. I’m a wedding photographer, and I want to start offering Wedding videos!

  • Rattyboots

Good to see you back on form Aaron. You are awesome and I’m so glad you made the decision to continue hosting Phlearn. You make it what it is. With or without Avery, this is still the best and most entertaining site on the Internet to learn photoshop and photography.
I’ve watched every episode and bought every Pro episode so far.
Whatever some people have said, it was a very tough thing for you to host that emotional video on your own. Be proud to be who you are and that you are able to express how you are feeling. All the best.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JVM3K7ZVEI3Z3AVDRD4AWEAPY4 Joel

    thanks so much!

  • Michelle

I agree, I’ve got an image of a couple sitting next to a lantern and I would love to add a subtle light inside.

  • Ian Ibrahim

    Hey Aaron,

My name is Ian Ibrahim and about 2 months ago i did your photoshop advance class and just in case you don’t remember this is me http://ianibrahim.com/. That is a plug for my new website hehehe but you previously knew my work from flicker i think ;~)

Let me start by saying that ever time you make a comment from the movie I Love You Man i love it, i have all my mates hooked on the movie.http://ianibrahim.com/http://ianibrahim.com/I never write on your show but do watch most episodes. When i first come across your work way before phlearn you were solo and i really respected the way you come across, from professionalism to knowledge of all things photography. When you introduced Avery that diminished  and not because i didn’t like her just for the fact i don’t think she contributed anything, your humor and knowledge are second to none and felt it was spoiled somewhat from the collaboration.

Please dont think i being mean im just telling you the way i feel ;~) Your both great people and i wish for both of you that you kept the two loves separate.

Best of luck mate and look forward to the goodness you bring to this medium.

    Thanks Ian.

  • Ian Ibrahim

sorry man but i clicked on adding my website twice and it inserted it into my comment ;~)

  • Mr. Charles Lenshar

Hey Aaron y do u miss Kat? I think you and her is more than friends. Please ask of you, be responsible and take consideration the feelings of Avery Carlton
