How to remove stray hairs

Photoshop, Post-Production, Retouching Aug 04 , Episode 102

Today we are focusing on removing stray hairs. Though techniques will vary, depending on the image you are trying to fix, I have found that the patch tool and the brush tool work very well.

Any Phlearners on google+? I think that could be a great direction to take the community as you can utilize hangouts for 10 person video chats, 1v1 conversations via huddle, or group discussions just in general. Also the photo quality in their sharing seems to be a notch up. I have some invites if people would like to try it out.

I would like to try it out! Hit me up with an invite :-)

Steffen, I just need your email address to send an invite

For a “different” forum! You could have live chat, webcam chat, etc!

But as Phlearn is a Photography site I think a great idea for a forum would be an open edit forum! Where users upload a photograph with a question ie “How do I remove stray hairs in this picture” and we all get to download that image and work on it but we have a usage right that means we’re only allowed to use that image on Phlearn and for non profit! Then we reply with our own edits and say what we did!

    Excellent episode!!!

Regarding to log in. Please don’t do it.  I think people did not think when they have
answered that question. My firs reaction was Yes as well but if you start
thinking from point of brand new user then answer is No.

Look at yourself. If you visit some side to check it out and
they force you to log in you will not and go away. I know I do.

If you wan to have section for member with added value
option, like to download different actions, brushes, textures that is fine.  However don’t put login on PHLEARN. You will
    loose lots of potential clients.

Usually new people will check out the side for while and
once they like it they will sign up for membership.

    I am speaking from experience.!!!!

Maybe other people can comment regarding to this subject as
    well.

Great technique but mind if I reccomend something, to preserve texture without using grain to make it look natural, you could change the layer blend mode to darken on the painted layers because the stray hairs are lighter than the rest of the face.

I think an integration of google+ would be awesome.
if you have anymore invites I’d love to give it a shot.

Having a login system doesn’t mean that you are required to login in order to access/view the site, as is common with many other sites. You would only be required to login in order to participate in the forum (e.g. start a topic or post a reply), or for whatever other features that require interactivity Aaron and the rest of the community come up with!

    Interesting. Thanks for the tip!

  • George Nagy

I don’t see the point why would I have to log in to post the comment. In many site you can post comment as guess. Another step. More steps more annoyed people gets. What is wrong with not to have to log in. I am telling you Aaron will loose lots of new potential people by forcing people to log in.
I have lots of friend who will not participate as soon as they have to create account somewhere.
Like I mention to have a section where you can log in and have added value services is fine. But don’t force me to create account if I don’t want to. Don’t complicate things.
Keep it easy, simple, smooth is the key.

Wow!  What a great episode.  Thank you so much for sharing all this great info.  I was trying to edit this photo with the clone tool and it was looking awful.  I’m excited to try out your techniques!!!!  You rock!  Btw, I let Sophie watch the episode and now she thinks she is famous:-)

    Excellent idea!

Also what I was thinking could be something like Facebook/Twitter (but not exactly). Of course in a forum there will be lots of people and not all will interest you. But if you are interested in someone (f.e. you know he gives good advices etc.) you can follow him (like in Twitter) so then when you login to your account on Phlearn you will see a wall (like in facebook) with all the notifications about the topics on the forum that you made or replayed to, comments to uploaded pictures and the activates of person you are following etc.

    I don’t thinke so.

I think that when you leave the free videos on Phlearn exactly as now. Free, no login required and with a possibility to comment. You don’t loose anything.

A possibility to login is nice because then:
    1. When I comment I use all the time the same account and don’t have to do it again and again + I can get notyfications in my account.
    2. When I buy a Phlearn PRO I can have the link to it in my account and don’t have to save the e-mail with a link and login & password – my account is my login and password (very easy).
    3. There can be some exclusive content for people that are logged in (like f.e. the Forum, extra materials etc.)
    4. And for Aaron it’s also good the gold of Internet is your own database of e-mail addresses of people that are interested in you offer and login system simply helps you create this database

So I think that if you do it like this you can only benefit for this.

a technique i use to remove stray hairs from the outside of the head when there is a complicated out of focus background is i will make a copy of my layer, then on the bottom layer i will use liquify and sort of shrink the head, this makes it so im making the background extend into the subject. then on the top layer i will add a mask and paint away the stray hairs revealing the extended background i just created. This saves a TON of time! anyone else ever do this? i have never seen it done before anywhere so thought i would share!

    She is famous!

    cool idea Dale!

  • ki

    Aaron this was awesome!!!!!

  • George Nagy

That is what I was trying to say. :-)
Don’t change anything what is now. Videos without login and comment on video without login. Who ever wanted to be on mailing list already is. And who ever wants to be in the future that person will do it as soon as he/she wants.
Also Aaron did not mention as why and for what he would add in login.
So you can’t asume anything. I want to prevent him of making mistakes. People don’t like to register. They will walk away, period. Not if and buts. Once they know about the side and what they can get then they may want to or not to register. ;-)
