Blending modes are one of the most important parts of Photoshop to learn because they are so powerful. We cover every blending mode used by photographers and what the differences are with each.

Working with Adobe Camera RAW

We cover what the most commonly used tools do, and our suggestions for what you should do with Adobe Camera RAW before opening your image in Photoshop.

Creating Custom Shortcuts

One of the best ways to become faster in Photoshop is to learn and master Keyboard Shortcuts. This is not always easy as there are a ton of them. The Right Tool for the Job

That is why we spend over an hour on this dialogue alone explaining all the commonly used tools in depth. We cover which tools are commonly used and how to get the most out of them, as well as let you know which tools you can ignore.

Important Options

Each tool in Photoshop is accompanied by many options of how to use the tool. These are displayed along the top of Photoshop and change depending on your tool. Using these options is very important to get the right functionality out of your tools. If you haven’t had luck with a tool like the Stamp Tool you may not have had the right options checked.

Each tool also has it’s own keyboard shortcuts, we go over all the important shortcuts to get you working quickly in Photoshop.

Adjustment Layers

When you are actually editing an image you are going to be using Adjustment Layers a ton! There are so many available that it can be overwhelming. We go over every Adjustment Layer in Photoshop, show you how to use it, and tell you when each is best used.

Mastering Adjustment Layers alone could make your images amazing!

Whenever I open my images in Bridge, they look nice and saturated but then when I click on the thumbnail and load the actual raw file preview it looks washed out and flat. Will this teach me why this happens and how to apply the initial preview settings to the image?

  • http://phlearn.com Aaron Nace

Hey Ben! The initial preview you see is the .JPG preview that your camera creates, which is separate from the RAW file. You can apply a preset in Lightroom or ACR ro bump up contrast and Saturation when importing. The original RAW file tries to keep all your info intact, so it doesn’t compress color or lights and darks, that is why it looks dull.

Depending on your camera, you can boost some of those settings in camera as well, though I would not recommend it, it is better to maintain all the info from the beginning. From there you can decide how much you would like to compress.

  • http://www.leavittphoto.com Ben Leavitt

Thanks Aaron! Is there a way to copy the jpg color and contrast settings in order to create a raw preset that looks like the jpg as a starting point?

  • http://www.vinsonimages.com yamaha83

anything you do with creative styles in your camera will all disappear if you shoot in RAW. if you boost the contrast, saturation, etc in camera, but shoot in raw. then that boost will only effect the preview JPEG. not the RAW file. its the same thing if you have your photo style set to black and white, but you shoot in RAW, when you import your RAW files, they will snap back color, even though you shot in black and white mode.

Im downloading the file in 190kb/s. Is something wrong on my end? Im pretty sure I have downloaded files quicker from phlearn before.

Oh and btw Aaron, I really missed an option today, sending  PRO´s as gifts to people. This episode is perfect as a gift for people who is interested in PS but are a bit scared to dive into the functionfilled program alone.

  • Cannimagine

Can’t seem to open it using Windows 7

  • John S

Just bought it! Thanks Aaron for the tutorials. You techniques will help me finish my final school portfolio on December

  • Luka

Hmm, I have the same problem…

  • Luka

Ok, it opens now, no problem anymore.

  • http://phlearn.com Aaron Nace

Thanks for the idea Mikael, Our current checkout process does not allow gifts, except if you purchase and fill in the other person’s email. We are working on it :)

  • Guus

    Thanks for this course!

You advertised that you will cover ALL tools in Photoshop. But you did not tell us that you skip all the tools that YOU do not use and that are unfortunately a lot … When YOU does not use a tool it maybe interesting for somebody else! … but on the other side,  the things you tell are worthwhile

  • Jasmine

I seem to be unable to download this at all. When it does finally download (very slowly) all I end up with is an empty zip folder…

More I have been a follower of Aaron's work well before Phlearn ever took shape. I was overjoyed when Phlearn was born. The website had single handedly revolutionised my way of learning photoshop. No more scouring for videos on youtube to learn or to find something interesting. Now I had a website where I could visit and learn something new every day. No re-hashed lessons like many other vloggers create...it was 100% original content.

I was a bit let down when Phlearn decided to expand its content to miscellaneous rehashed articles found around the web and on a thousand other websites/blogs. It was no longer unique and no longer comprised of just original content. Your later decision to remove all that content from the website brought new hope that not all focused incredibly talented startups have to become run of the mill, a dime a dozen websites.

Phlearn Pros are also a great concept. I totally respect the business model and have purchased a few myself. The level of detail that can be found in these tutorials is nothing short of amazing. It's like discovering photoshop anew every time.

Something I would really love to see is one or multiple Phlearn Pro episodes where you use 3d modelling software either to create a concept or better still, to actually create assets for the final image. I have never tried using these kind of programs and having a photographer's introduction to these applications might make more sense to us than delving into video tutorials found on the net which are more targeted to hardcore 3d artists.

Thank you for all that you have done.

More I am currently a graduate student in Art and Design and Phlearn is my number one resource for Photoshop and Photography tutorials. When comparing Phlearn to other training sites, the first thing which stands out is Aaron's passion for the subject matter and teaching it to others. When I was in Chicago I stopped by to check out their studio. The staff at Phlearn couldn't have been nicer to take the time out of their schedule to give me a tour and talk to me.

The tutorials are much more than the technical way to create an image. They help you think about ways to solve and make your own photos. Where other sites teach about the tools. Aaron teaches how to use them in a successful manner. Although I have only been serious about photography for the last two years, I feel the biggest improvement in my craft started by watching Phlearn.

More There's not much more to say about Phlearn and the work of Aaron Nace that hasn't already been said, but it bares meaning every time someone spouts a similar story. Phlearn has been invaluable to my development as a photographer. Whether it be learning new techniques, understanding pitfalls and avoiding cliches/ common mistakes, learning important business practice or just taking the time to humble ones self to the creative brilliance this site is always oozing.

The Pro Tutorials are just too good to comprehend sometimes. Being given so much for so little is a rare encounter these days, but it exists here, at Phlearn. The tutorials provide stunning depth and tutelage for amazing images at very affordable prices. Money aside though, the thing I enjoy most about these videos is the way Aaron walks through an image, recognizing which bits may need to be explained multiple times and never ignoring the fact he has made these video to TEACH. He is not, like so many other tutorial sites, just showing you how he made an image and leaving up to you to figure out the details.

I could speak for hours on just how brilliant this site is, but I won't because the site is more than capable to show you for itself. A unique website that accommodates to all skill levels, whether you watch a video a day, or return when you need help, you can get something from Phlearn immediately.

More Without Phlearn I would not be where I'm now. I spent hours watching your tutorials, enjoying the high quality and friendly atmosphere. If I need to know something Phlearn is where I look first.

You have taught me so much and you guys are just incredible for sharing your knowledge with us, not asking anyting in return. You've showed me things I hadn't even considered to think about and I have to say THANK YOU for being just awsome! I'm very proud to be part of the Phlearn Phamily!

More I am quite new to the Phlearn Phamily (only about 2 weeks), but since I found Phlearn I haven't stopped. I've watched ever episode from the most current going back MONTHS and am still going. The wealth of knowledge within the free content has already lead me to purchases a couple Pro content just within the last week. The transparency of Phlearn coupled by the opportunity to free involved really does give this website/service a community feel.

Thanks for everything that the entire Phlearn team does and I'm happy to be a part of the Phamily.

More Phlearn Pro Tutorials are better than ice cream. I've been using Photoshop professionally for 15 years. Of all the sources of information on Photography and Photoshop I like Phlearn the best. Why? While most tutorials teach "How" to do things, Phlearn Pro tutorials teach "How" and "Why".

Now that Aaron is including concept, preproduction, and photo shoot knowledge into the tutorials you get more than a simple trick you can do. It's more like learning along side a photographer and peeking into their mind.

More At first I thought this PHLEARN guy was off his ROCKER and had a lot of girlfriends. I quickly realized he means business. Phlearn is our go to resources for all things photoshop.

'Phlearn It' has become part of our every day vocabulary. Keep up the great work Aaron...you whacky b@stard.

More I have been using Photoshop for a few years, but have just started my first 365 self-portraiture project. Wow, It takes a lot of work to make me look like I want to look. Once I found Phlearn, it was like an addiction. There is so much useful information on the site, and Aaron is truely talented and amazing (and a little crazy).

After watching hours and hours of free videos, I downloaded the retouching pack from the Pro Tutorials. There is so much information in there about what to look for, how to fix it, some truly amazing techniques made simple. Now, I just have to figure out how not to end up with a blue face, but artistically, I don't think Aaron can teach me that. Just practice. I am at the beginning of my photography journey, but learning by leaps and bounds, thank you Phlearn, and Phlearn Pro Tutorials.

More Several years ago, when I first got into photography I looked online for tips, tutorials and so on, but there was very little good information out there. Then I took Aaron's class that he used to teach and I started watching Phlearn when it came out and my skills dramatically improved in the whole understanding of photography, along with my photoshop abilities.

I have been using photoshop for 8 years now and ever since I took Aaron's class and watched some of the Pro tutorials, I have become significantly more fluent in photoshop. It's funny because when I feel I understand how most conceptual images are put together and edited, Aaron comes out with a new technique that changes my whole perspective.

More I can't say enough about Phlearn.

It's the single most important resource for the development of my photography. But it doesn't stop there. Aaron has taught me not only how to take a good photo, but he's taught me a new way of viewing art, and the world for that matter. Anybody can explain the nuances of aperture, shutter speed, and iso, but it takes a special person to infuse creativity, change the perspective of others, and build a community.

Aaron's achieved this is the last two years, and I cannot wait to see what he has in store for the future! Thanks for the invaluable gifts of art and PHamily!
