Photo Shoot

For this image, we were faced with a couple challenges. First, we wanted the subject to look as though she is in the middle of a winter world, but the photo was taken in the middle of the summer. We also wanted the majority of the light on the subject to be coming from a lantern. To make these happen, we did shoot outdoors, mostly for fill light. We used a reflector to block the sunlight from hitting our subject. The lantern was created by placing a speedlight in a fixture, overpowering the sun.

Creating a Background

To get the full effect of the image, it is important that we have control over all the elements in it. That is why using a background “as is” can result in a limit of creativity. The background is a composite of a couple of images. You will learn how to manipulate the light in a background to make it match the subject, and how to color it to fit the mood of the photo.

Working with Animals

If you are going to be working with animals, you are in for a treat. Animals add a great dimension to images, but they can be tough to photograph. For the most part, they will do what they want, not what you want. There are some great ways to get the shot even if some of the talent is not cooperating. This mostly involves taking many photos, and having the willingness to cut things out. We go over the best ways to do both.

More I had been editing with Photoshop for about 1,5 years already when I discovered Phlearn! It was pretty much at the beginning and if I remember correctly, I found out about it via Aaron's Flickr stream. It must have been around episode 25 or so and ever since then I have been hooked! I loved the old episodes and I love the news ones and I esp. love the Pro Tutorials because it makes you understand the magic behind it!

I used to watch tutorials on YouTube and could never really follow them too well so I gave up eventually, most of the time pretty frustrated because I wanted to improve my skills! Phlearn has showed me the inside secrets of Photoshop and how easy it can be if you know certain things! Thanks to Phlearn, I have improved to a whole new level and I will forever be grateful for that.

You rock, Aaron and Phlearn! <3

More As far as photoshop is concerned I'm very much in the early stages, but the way Aaron teaches even an old non-techie beginner like myself can follow along with plenty to learn in a very understandable way no matter how much, or little, they know.

Someday maybe I'll actually get decent at this stuff, but for now at least I found a place where I can find plenty to keep me going without feeling overwhelmed or intimidated... Proud to be part of the Phamily!!!

More I started in photography about 2 years ago and decided to see where my imagination can take me. I quickly realized that I loved to edit my shots to create something that often the naked eye can't see. I heard a lot of chatter on different social networks regarding the use of Photoshop and how nothing in photography is real anymore...well, I couldn't disagree more. Photoshop is just the new painters canvas, and just like every major painter drew what their heart saw, we use Photoshop to bring to life what is in our minds.

I saw Aaron's work a while back on Flickr and was amazed by his level of creativity, the quality of his editing and of course his amazing photography in the first place. And this is where PHLEARN came into play for me. The first time I came across PHLEARN, I thought "Finally! Someone is providing and teaching the tools for those who want to express the images in their heads but didn't have the know how".

Just through the Free Episodes alone you can tremendously improve your skills and start to build images like never before, so just imagine what is possible with the PRO Tutorials. On top of all that, PHLEARN doesn't even ask for a lot of money for what they provide, which makes it the first honest and fair deal on the net with a serious return on investment.

Go through 3 Free Episodes and I promise you, you will be hooked on the entire PHLEARN package!

More I met Aaron at B&H in NYC for a free lesson on retouching a portrait and I was completely blown away by his skills, his style and -of course- enthusiasm! Then I follow the guy on twitter and he announces that he's launching "something" called Phlearn! I give it a try and I became addicted to "phlearn" something new almost every day. Then, he launched the first Phlearn PRO and I became addicted once again. Nothing is left out, he tells you EVERYTHING he knows while he's doing it! You see him doing the stuff step by step, explaining it to you and then you do it and magic happens!! I actually keep notes with the minutes and seconds of the videos of stuff I like to keep for future references (like how to apply some make up or how to put light on a fairy's wings) :D

Phlearn PRO tutorials are phenomenal. Almost all I know in photoshop is thanks to those tutorials. I was completely lost before this, I had some skills but without direction and since Phlearn I've been able to apply Aaron's techniques to my own style and I'm more than satisfied with the results.

I gotta warn you, you'll get used to Aaron's energy and style and it's going to be hard for you to go back other tutorials from another artist.

More The internet is a wonderful thing. Without it, it would have been difficult for me to learn everything that I have.

Aaron has created an amazing resource for people to learn Photoshop. It's a new world, and Phlearn is leading the way in teaching the next generation of image makers. Never stop learning!

More I remember having Aaron's images in my collection of inspirational artwork on my laptop when I came to Australia to study Photography in 2008. I had no idea how that awesomeness could be created and was dying to find out. Needless to say, when Phlearn was born it was like a dream come true!

I absolutely love how Aaron is laid back and fun in his video tutorials, it just makes you feel like you're hanging out with a friend, who's teaching you some cool stuff - it's easy to comprehend, it's not tiring and every video is jam packed with golden nuggets of priceless information. The entire website is full of brilliant educational materials.

I wish Phlearn was created 5 years ago, it would have saved me a lot of time learning Photoshop!

Great job! The entire Phlearn team, you guys are amazing! Keep up the great work!

More I own 18 of the Phlearn Pro Tutorials, and each one has taught me something new.

Aaron is such a great teacher, everything is explained in a way that I can understand. What I thought was once out of my reach in Photoshop is now at my fingertips. I have grown and expanded my knowledge to a point where my imagination and time are my only obstacles.

Thanks Phlearn!!

More PHLEARN is awesome!

First off, Aaron is a character. I've watched a lot of other photoshop tutorials, but Aaron keeps it entertaining, supportive, and positive. All of that is really important for creating a learning environment that has worked for me. It's weird - watching a PHLEARN PRO episode is super-entertaining. I might honestly watch them even if I wasn't trying to learn... but as Mary Poppins once said: a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down!

And does it ever! I've gone from being intimidated by Photoshop to feeling confident using the many different tools, techniques, and strategies that Aaron demonstrates. No, more than that - now I feel confident exploring and experimenting in Photoshop.

I want to thank Aaron and the rest of the crew at PHLEARN for what they are building, and how much they have already taught me. Thanks guys!

More I have been a follower of Aaron's work well before Phlearn ever took shape. I was overjoyed when Phlearn was born. The website had single handedly revolutionised my way of learning photoshop. No more scouring for videos on youtube to learn or to find something interesting. Now I had a website where I could visit and learn something new every day. No re-hashed lessons like many other vloggers create...it was 100% original content.

I was a bit let down when Phlearn decided to expand its content to miscellaneous rehashed articles found around the web and on a thousand other websites/blogs. It was no longer unique and no longer comprised of just original content. Your later decision to remove all that content from the website brought new hope that not all focused incredibly talented startups have to become run of the mill, a dime a dozen websites.

Phlearn Pros are also a great concept. I totally respect the business model and have purchased a few myself. The level of detail that can be found in these tutorials is nothing short of amazing. It's like discovering photoshop anew every time.

Something I would really love to see is one or multiple Phlearn Pro episodes where you use 3d modelling software either to create a concept or better still, to actually create assets for the final image. I have never tried using these kind of programs and having a photographer's introduction to these applications might make more sense to us than delving into video tutorials found on the net which are more targeted to hardcore 3d artists.

Thank you for all that you have done.
