Photo Shoot

Sometimes an idea drives every detail of a shoot, dictating what props need to be used etc, other times the props dictate the shoot. This was the case for this image, it happened almost out of accident. I was in an asian market and just happened to see an octopus for sale. The first thing I thought was – “We have to put this on someone’s head!”.

That is exactly what we did. We added about 1/2 gallon of corn syrup to the shoot to give it a bit more detail, and help bring out the highlights of the octopus. In my opinion you can never have enough corn syrup or baby oil around for photo shoots.

Sharpening, Dodging & Burning

To get the most detail possible out of this image, it is important to be able to sharpen well. Sharpening can add a ton of detail by bringing out both highlights and shadows. We also go over dodging and burning your image to bring these details out even more!

Adding Lighting Effects

The original image was kept very clean using flags for the lights, to not add any spill into the photo. Starting out clean gives you the option of adding effects if that is what you want, or you can keep the image very crisp. For this concept we wanted a lot of color and texture everywhere, and lighting effects help to bring that look to life.

We include 10 FREE textures in this tutorial that add a ton to this image, and will work on your images as well! Through these textures, we are able to add atmosphere and make it look like the lighting is really interacting with the image.

Learn Color Theory

Certain colors work well with each other, and knowing how to manipulate your images and push them towards these color ranges will help an image stand out.

You have many choices when deciding to work with color. You can make your image using complimentary colors, analogous colors, and many other combinations. We explain why we use certain colors, and how to accurately change of the colors of your highlights, shadows, and mid tones.

All The Small Details

You are in for a total surprise with this tutorial. We go through some pretty unconventional methods to get effects and details into the image.

You will learn the benefit of being crazy and trying things you would normally never do, simply because no one else does it. This is where creativity and inspiration come from!

Adding Light

To add drama to an image, you can enhance a light source, or create one from scratch. In the original image, there isn’t a bright light visible in the top right corner of the image. When adding a light source, there are many things that need to be taken into account. Making sure the lighting of the original image will support your placement of these details is huge!

More Several years ago, when I first got into photography I looked online for tips, tutorials and so on, but there was very little good information out there. Then I took Aaron's class that he used to teach and I started watching Phlearn when it came out and my skills dramatically improved in the whole understanding of photography, along with my photoshop abilities.

I have been using photoshop for 8 years now and ever since I took Aaron's class and watched some of the Pro tutorials, I have become significantly more fluent in photoshop. It's funny because when I feel I understand how most conceptual images are put together and edited, Aaron comes out with a new technique that changes my whole perspective.

More Phlearn Pro tutorials are literally the best photoshop tutorials I found on the net. And I've looked hard. Of course they are not for everyone. If you are only beginning to learn photoshop, then I think, they are not for you. But if you know the basics, and want to learn how you can express yourself better using photoshop then there is nothing comparing to what Aaron teaches! For a very long time I've looked at incredible composites done in photoshop and dreamed to learn how they were done. These tutorials made it possible for me!

Thank you Aaron for your work!

More First of all I must say that I don't speak english very well (it's not my native language) but I'll try to explain myself. How PHLearn has changed my life? Well... Do you know the feeling of looking back and been ashamed of yourself? This is what it happens to me when I look my old photos. Phlearn has tought me a lot of usefull thing: blending, dodging, retouching... things that it could seem easy to do but that they aren't.

As a non-english-native I have to say that Aaron speaks very well, so it's easier for me to understand him. In addition, when he explains something, he doesn't tell you what you should do but he shows you. And, you know, it makes you feel relieved.

In conclusion, if you're thinking of buying some PRO Tutorials let me tell you something: "Stop thinking! Just buy it!" It's the best inversion that you could do. They're usefull and you're going to understand them quite well. And I'm sure that you will be able to make fantastic things soon!

More There's not much more to say about Phlearn and the work of Aaron Nace that hasn't already been said, but it bares meaning every time someone spouts a similar story. Phlearn has been invaluable to my development as a photographer. Whether it be learning new techniques, understanding pitfalls and avoiding cliches/ common mistakes, learning important business practice or just taking the time to humble ones self to the creative brilliance this site is always oozing.

The Pro Tutorials are just too good to comprehend sometimes. Being given so much for so little is a rare encounter these days, but it exists here, at Phlearn. The tutorials provide stunning depth and tutelage for amazing images at very affordable prices. Money aside though, the thing I enjoy most about these videos is the way Aaron walks through an image, recognizing which bits may need to be explained multiple times and never ignoring the fact he has made these video to TEACH. He is not, like so many other tutorial sites, just showing you how he made an image and leaving up to you to figure out the details.

I could speak for hours on just how brilliant this site is, but I won't because the site is more than capable to show you for itself. A unique website that accommodates to all skill levels, whether you watch a video a day, or return when you need help, you can get something from Phlearn immediately.

More I started in photography about 2 years ago and decided to see where my imagination can take me. I quickly realized that I loved to edit my shots to create something that often the naked eye can't see. I heard a lot of chatter on different social networks regarding the use of Photoshop and how nothing in photography is real anymore...well, I couldn't disagree more. Photoshop is just the new painters canvas, and just like every major painter drew what their heart saw, we use Photoshop to bring to life what is in our minds.

I saw Aaron's work a while back on Flickr and was amazed by his level of creativity, the quality of his editing and of course his amazing photography in the first place. And this is where PHLEARN came into play for me. The first time I came across PHLEARN, I thought "Finally! Someone is providing and teaching the tools for those who want to express the images in their heads but didn't have the know how".

Just through the Free Episodes alone you can tremendously improve your skills and start to build images like never before, so just imagine what is possible with the PRO Tutorials. On top of all that, PHLEARN doesn't even ask for a lot of money for what they provide, which makes it the first honest and fair deal on the net with a serious return on investment.

Go through 3 Free Episodes and I promise you, you will be hooked on the entire PHLEARN package!
