Removing Sunburn – Episode #21 Friday

So what happens if a model shows up to your shoot with a wicked sunburn? No need to cancel the shoot- we show you how to get rid of the sunburn in Photoshop. In this episode we do a quick photo shoot with a 70-200mm 2.8 IS outdoors, using a gold reflector for fill. In the second part of the episode we use levels and a Hue/Sat adjustment later to take care of that nasty sunburn.

I had a nightmare photoshoot with this one woman! She had tattoos all over her body. I’m talking yellow happy faces, Chinese characters, a portrait of her dog and a couple of quotes like “don’t judge me” and other ironic phrasing. Just tattoos everywhere. So I thought this was gonna be a cool shoot. Grungy girl with big tatoos…cool right? After the photoshoot she drops the bomb on me. “Can you photoshop my tattoos out? I want these to be as clean as possible!” Keep in mind she was in tank tops and cami’s during the entire shoot! Of course, just starting in the business I told her “Absolutely! I can do anything!” haha! What a fool. I spent literally an entire week cloning, healing brushing and patching those tattoos out. It looked pretty seamless. The girl ended up never calling me back to pick up her pictures! Complete disaster. But at least I got a lot of healing brush practice! HAHA!

Oddest thing I can think of was a woman we cast to be a mom for a lifestyle shoot. Didn’t notice until we were retouching our hero shot, but one of her legs was significantly underdeveloped (birth defect?) and needed to be “rebuilt” in photoshop.

Best “headslapper” was a client who wanted a 3/4 thigh length skirt to be elongated to a just above the knee length skirt on a business woman sitting down. Somehow adding 2″ of fabric saved the sanctity of the piece!

When looking on the picture in the pheatured section, I thought that you could dedicade one episode to show us how to shoot with camera connected to computer. When to use this, what do we need to do so, pros/cons, which software to use and finally the most interesting your experience..
    What do you think guys?
    Cheers,
    Peter

    awesome as always
i had i problem that i toke a picture of my sister and here hair dye was so old so the real hair color is showing and its a big dereference between the two colors so i fix it by using color balance i selected the brighter parts and mad them darker and i used a layer with a color that she wanted and i set the blending mode to color and it worked very well but i dont have the picture now :( anyway thanks and see you monday … and welcome kat :)

I always try to meet up with the model(s) at least a few days before a photoshoot, whenever possible. It helps break the ice a little bit, cos sometimes it can be quite awkward on set otherwise. Also, it allows me to kinda see what the model’s skin is like (not to judge them or anything, but so that i can brief my make up artist as to what to anticipate etc), i also take that opportunity to look for their potential (flattering) angles and natural posture. Yes, I’m a bit of a control freak. :(

Oh and of course, thankiessssss for this episode guys and very useful tip Avery. *i do hope your sunburn heals soon btw. :( *

I think you made her sunburn much darker in PS as the ‘before’ shot… Otherwise Avery is secretly an Oompa Loompa. I am getting really close to buying a tablet, looks fun.

LOL I was thinking the same about Avery’s shirts.

My Photography and Photoshop skills are self taught and as such I know some basic stuff and some advanced stuff, but obviously being self taught there are gaps in my knowledge and I do stuff either the wrong way or the long way round. Your tutorials are great really helping me hone my skill set thanks so much.
