The New Canon 1D X!

our thoughts of it's release
Camera, Photography, Review Oct 18 , Episode 155

For an unexpected twist this week we decided to review the new announcement of the Canon 1D X. We will continue with community week as scheduled tomorrow, but we have to change a bit when the big guys throw us for a loop by releasing a camera before we were expecting. So in today’s episode Chris and I will go over the new features of the Canon 1D X (not S) and what we think about what they’re for in relation to the professional industry.

Let us know what you guy’s think about this camera and what you would like to see in cameras in the future.

take it somewhere else dude. this is the 21st century, stop the hate. phlearn loves everyone.

Take your hate elsewhere. Your brand of religious terrorism is not only not wanted, but will be vigorously defended against. You’re a false prophet.

your ideas for a dream camera are pretty dumb.  your not even talking about a camera anymore.  what you want is a computer that is designed to do what is technically impossible right now just so you can play around and not worry about shooting the shots right the first time.  choosing your depth of field after the shot?  Thats one of the main things a photographer does.  without doing things like that  your just another random person pointing your camera and not caring how good its shot.  Wanting a camera that can tell where things are in 3d so you can move them in the shot later?  Your ideas are just really dumb and sounds like they arent coming from a real photographer.  We are photographers. We want better cameras that actually improve on things we use the most. Who wants to be stuck shooting cameras at only 5 mps or 800 iso? The only way to make a better camera for real photographers is to improve these things.  not turn a camera into some super device thats capable of doing completely impossible things. Learn to shoot the photos right in the first place and you wont need all these stupid things you want in a camera.

So much for civility and critical thinking. Score one point for the Loud Mouth Rhetoric side.

“Your ideas … are pretty dumb”? Please check yourself.

Seems my dream camera is much more down to earth than yours: What I’d buy in an instant would be something like the D700′s sensor in a 7D, priced well below $2000. Until that camera shows up, I keep hoping my 40D (and RebelXT) doesn’t break. ;-)

From your wish list, higher dynamic range would be my first buy-in.

I’d expect photo journalists to be 1DX customers, btw.

    The ‘X’ is for 10. It’s Canon’s 10th generation of DSLRs.

For me this camera is good, because hopefully it means the price of the 5d mkII will go down! I wanna upgrade!

  • Murrayphotography

This is ridiculous, get off phlearn.

  • Murrayphotography

i meant that to the haters, not “blackstrider”

My PERFECT camera is the one who can capture my thoughts
images. Yes, this is not really a camera, it’s like a screen capture,
but this is that I really want, something that capture the images in my
    head.

By the way, Chris, you inspired me the end of a series of photos that I
have in mind, thank you. You will see it in the future (I hope no to
far, I don’t really have time to take photos those days).

    Have a nice day guys!

Hey guys, I think this is not the place to discus this kind of staff… can we talk about photography and photoshop, please?

  • Chris

A company called Lytro already created a sensor that not only measures the color and intensity of light, but also the direction.  It allows you to focus after the fact on your computer.  Its pretty snazzy.  They used to have example pics up but it seems they took them down for some big announcement, that appears to be today….

    Me??? Inspire? Whaaaa?

Haha. Well, I’m glad. I can’t wait to see it!

    (Must be a different Chris?)

    My dream camera is simple:
No noise whatsoever, exact colour rendering and a dynamic range matching the human eye. The 16 Megapixels I have now is good enough. As I am an underwaterphotographer: completely waterproof to 100 metres or so (it would be nice to toss out these heavy and bulky underwater housings), with depth-driven colour correction coupled with distance metering in both natural light situations AND using strobes. Forget image stabilisation – include 3D gyroscopic stabilisation of the body.

  • Despenster

what you think Aaron about a Hasselblad, or Phase one ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/priscilla.lf Priscilla Lumbreras Fernández

You will see and you will remember my words ;)

  • Adrian Acevedo

-Hey 30 stops dynamic range would be awesome !
-IR autofocus,I have it on my Mamiya and works perfect and light it’s not even a problem,I can shoot in completely dark spaces.
-split screen for manual focusing would be good to,I love my old lenses look with adapters for my 1Ds.
-perfect color reproduction,or at least as good as film.
-I don’t really care about noise,as long it looks nice!
-better resolution and micro contrast, just like digital backs for medium format cameras,or we can go even better and go for a 6*4,8*10 or 16*20 large format camera resolution and microcontrast
-I know you guys may not understand this one,but I would like a better focal range in canon lenses,if you compare canon focus range with Carl Zeiss or some nikon lenses, you will see the difference, when you use apertures like 5.6,you get a better focus in The Zeiss lenses, I know this isn’t about the camera, but camera it’s not always the tool.
-I want a bigger view finder And 100% accurate
    -Less buttons
-selective focusing points all over the view finder
-focusing check after you take the picture
And I think that’s all I would like to have in just one camera !

    Hello Aaron,
My dream camera has got Siri built in!

    That would be very cool!
    :-)

In my personal opinion Canon needed to bring out a 7d Mk 2 I would happily buy a clone of the 7d with the only difference is full frame! For my purposes I believe that would suit me for the next 3 years at least! This would be good for 2 reasons: 1) the 7d would go down in price and 2) They would not need to give it a super high price tag because they’re not actually changing other features!

  • http://www.facebook.com/dale.a.richards Dale Antony Richards

I would also like my dream camera to come with:

    A better diopter.
The default pop up flash can be removed and still triggered whilst off camera.
Better tri-pod screw! Am I the only person who when I put my camera tripod on portrait stance it slowly unscrews?
Full touchscreen on the back, if we did not have buttons the screen would be about 4-5″ so can we not remove them and make it all touchscreen.

  • Mark

How about a camera for photographers. No filters. No auto modes. No built in scenes. No nonsense.

  • Nicolas

maybe an answer to your wishes of the perfect camera : http://www.lytro.com/.
    it’s a begining :)

  • http://twitter.com/StevenBrunton Steve

Spot on, I was going to suggest Lytro. But the lenses/sensors are so tiny I think it’s like 2mpxls at the moment? That was a rough guess.

    I am waaaiiiting and waiting for the new 5Dmkiii  (or 6D?)  ZZzz…. :( (((

  • Balint Alovits

The problem is with the 1DX, is mainly the pricetag for sure.
For this 6800 USD, u get a 5D Mark II, which is more than enough for all the photography works generally + you get a 16-35L II, 50 1.2L, 70-200 2.8 IIL + some CF Cards.
    So i don’t think I’ll buy it.

It’s obvious that this camera is aimed directly at Nikon’s D3s. It’s the perfect wedding camera, that’s basically what this camera is made for. More or less. I own and use a 5D Mark II for all my work, I’m a full time photographer, that’s my job, and while I don’t make tons of cash, I make enough to get by. I think wedding photographers, successful ones, make a LOT of money. Way more than enough to grab two Canon 1DX cameras if they really wanted.

25-40 weddings a year at a minimum of 3500 dollars a wedding? That’s a lot more money than most people make at photography of any kind. I don’t shoot that many weddings, but I average about 15 a year. But I shoot mostly other types of stuff, weddings aren’t “my thing”.

The 1DX is something I would consider getting purely for the weddings I shoot every year. Going on assignment for travel photography in crazy environments, documentary work, stuff like that (again, weddings as well) this camera will be the ultimate (for a few years of course).

I love my 5D Mark II, and have been using it for just about 3 years now. It’s great. But like everything it has it’s problems, for studio work, for location work where you’re always shooting stationary stuff, always shooting low ISO, it’s amazing. Hell, it’s amazing for almost everything else.

I believe over all that the 1DX is filling that D3s market share on the Canon side, and to me that’s great. It’s not the ideal dream camera for people who shoot models and other creative stuff that need high dynamic range and high megapixels. But it fills that roll well too. Like I said, it’s clearly Canon’s attempt to take direct aim at the Nikon D3s and take it up a notch. Good or bad, it’s definitely done that.

My realistic dream camera, because I want something to make my 5D2 go to back up duty next year, is something, like you said, more dynamic range, 21-26 megapixels, AF system of about 19 AF points, most cross type. Higher ISO, because I do shoot weddings, and I do not like on camera flash. Etc. etc.

    It’s coming, but when…..

Also the price point for the 1DX should have been a bit closer to $5500.00 or so.

  • Johan

Take a look at nikon if you want better dynamic range

“Who wants to be stuck shooting cameras at only 5 mps or 800 iso” ?!

hate to think what piece of crap you are using at the moment!!!

  • Astragony

    I have a leica m8, I want an m9

no bells and whisles, all there is are 2 dials on the lens and a shutter button

OK, I think there’s a current technology that allows clear panes of glass to become opaque when a current is passed through them. I think some posh offices and very posh homes have them so you can have floor to ceiling windows during the day letting light flood in and, at the flick of a switch, opaque windows at night blocking nosey neighbours.

I’d like this technology in lenses to replace the current, physical, mechanical aperture with the electronic glass aperture. By using this tech to create aperture masks on the glass aperture surface, blocking light and allowing light in where necessary I’m sure this would allow for wide–open f/1 apertures just as easily as f/128! The electronic aperture would effectively be a tiny, programmable light mask. Depending upon the glass aperture’s “resolution” the aperture could be as circular or as polygonal as you like. Any–sided if you wish.

I’m sure it would also be possible to arrange for “shapes” to be created on the electronic glass aperture so you’d be able to “upload” shaped apertures for star or heart–shaped bokeh for example which would scale nicely across the range of f–stops unlike the current method of cutting out a mask from black paper.
