Beyond the Original
Virtual copies in Lightroom are invaluable for creating multiple edits of a single image without duplicating the original file. This tutorial will guide you through creating, editing, and organizing virtual copies, enabling you to deliver diverse image versions to clients efficiently.
Create & Filter
1. Begin by right-clicking an image and selecting “Create Virtual Copy.”
2. To view only virtual copies, use the Library Filter bar (press the “/” key) and select “Attribute,” then filter by “Virtual Copies.” Stacked originals and copies can be expanded or collapsed by clicking the stack number. Color labels (red, yellow, etc.) can be assigned for further organization via the bottom toolbar or number keys (6-9).
Diverse Edits
3. Switch to the Develop module (“D”) to edit a virtual copy.
4. Apply adjustments like black and white conversions or color grading.
5. To sync edits across multiple virtual copies, select them, choose “Sync Settings,” check desired adjustments, and click “Synchronize.” This allows you to create distinct looks for different client preferences or uses.
Organized Exports
6. To export variations, filter by color labels or virtual copy status.
7. Select desired images, go to “File” > “Export,” and rename files with custom text (e.g., “Original Color,” “B&W,” “Color Grade”).
8. Create separate folders for each variation within your export destination. This ensures clear organization for client delivery.
That concludes day 20 of this series. Prepare to be amazed, because tomorrow, we’re diving headfirst into the revolutionary lens blur tool!
