PRO Photoshop Tutorial

In this INTERMEDIATE Photoshop Tutorial, you will learn how to composite multiple versions of the same person together to create an amazing image. You will learn how to light an image like this, how we built the set, what is important when compositing this type of image, and create a glowing soul from scratch.

BONUS: We also include 3 custom brushes made just for this tutorial!

Compositing

You will learn every detail necessary to go from beginning to end in this special compositing and lighting tutorial!

Photo Shoot

The photo shoot for this image was amazing! We built the set just days before the shoot, and worked out all the lighting the night before. We knew our main challenges were going to be making multiple copies of the same person, and keeping the lighting consistent for all of them. We also had to make a small blue glowing light, which required a little bit of DIY rigging!

One of the big reasons this shoot was made great is that everyone really got into character, and people were acting more than modeling. This helps the image look as though it is really happening in some place, rather than a staged photo shoot.

Check out the Behind the Scenes Video!

Dodging and Burning

Getting everything together in a composite is important, but it will not add style to the image – that is where dodging and burning comes into play. You will learn how we alter the highlights and shadows on this image to create extra detail and draw attention to certain areas.

A great example of this technique in action is on the boy’s ribcage.

Phlearn PRO Photoshop Tutorial Island of Morel

Creating Light Rays

You will learn how to very quickly create light rays from scratch that will interact with your subjects and make it look like there really is light coming into your image through fog.

Phlearn PRO Photoshop Tutorial Island of Morel

Creating a Soul

For this image, we start off with a shape made in Cinema 4d, and build it up to what you see here in Photoshop. The image and the custom brushes are both included in the tutorial, so you can follow along when making your own special effects.

You will learn how to make the light from this soul actually look like it is casting light onto the models!

Phlearn PRO Photoshop Tutorial Island of Morel

Changing Hands

The subjects all need to interact with each other in a good composite to make the image come to life. This can be tricky sometimes, especially when you are working with multiple versions of each person. Because it is impossible to have them actually interacting, we fake it in Photoshop.

We cover great techniques for making it look like the photos are seamless, as well as getting rid of extra details, like the boy’s left over hand!

Coloring Your Image

At the end of this tutorial, you will learn great techniques to add color and interest into your image!

really looking forward to this one. i’m in the middle of “howl” at the moment and i’m learning so much from these vids.  Thanks so much for putting together all these tutorials in one place. i have so little spare time and, after taking shots, editing and then hunting down tutorials, it make practicing and learning new skills a very random and seldom occurrence.  I’ve already seen the shots in my head become closer to reality… much appreciated!

Hey Jesus sorry about that! Try it on a different browser and see if that fixes the problem. If not please send an email to info@phlearn.com and I will work out a way to get it to you

More Aaron and the whole Phlearn Phamily have helped me break out the the rut of doing the same thing over and over again. It had gotten so bad that I was not even opening Photoshop anymore and I was just using lightroom. Phlearn has helped me re-discover Photoshop and have the confidence to explore new techniques that I would not have done prior to discovering Phlearn. Thanks Aaron and everyone at Phlearn!

More Newbie to Phlearn. But with these first two purchases, I'm confident Aaron and Phlearn will be added to my list of 'e-Mentors' who have helped me grow. I just purchased Vintage Action.

What I love about it (besides the look) is that Aaron has left the layers editable....allowing me to continue to make the image 'mine'. Rather than my feeling I've pressed a button and now it's someone else's work.... on top of mine. Thankyou for that Aaron!

More As a photographer, I'm constantly working to hone my skills so I can create better and better work for myself and my clients - Phlearn Pro and the community here are an essential part of this. I've spent countless hours and dollars on photography classes but I recommend Phlearn time and time again because I haven't found a better, more up-to-date, or affordable source of Photoshop knowledge than what's available right here.

There are plenty of talented photographers who are mediocre teachers and plenty of gifted teachers without photographic talent. Aaron Nace doesn't have either of those problems

More I've been a Photoshop nerd since version 3, and I can tell you that I've had a love/hate relationship with PS since the very beginning. As powerful as it is, PS is also one if the most frustrating and difficult to learn pieces of software I have ever encountered. I used to think of myself as somewhat of a PS "guru", that is until I happened upon the Phlearn website. It was immediately obvious that despite his somewhat cavalier and funny exterior, Aaron was a guy who knew the in's and out's of PS like know one I had seen before.

After viewing countless free tutorials (hey, I'm cheap) I finally broke down and purchased several of the Pro Tutorials and let me tell you that I can unabashedly recommend these tutorials to anyone at any skill level. Anyone who wants to get the most out of PS and increase their productivity and creativity. I have rarely seen a person with a gift and passion for teaching like Aaron and I can honestly say that I have learned and applied something from almost every tutorial I have viewed: Something that cannot be said about every tutorial site I have used and there have been many!!

Thanks Phlearn, I'm better at what I love to do because of you guys!

More I've been experimenting with Photoshop for 4 or more years now, and I found myself constantly using the same techniques which did not help me progress and did not make my photos look too realistic. After coming across Phlearn, joining the daily discussions in the episodes and getting a Phlearn Pro video, I realized how much more there is to Photoshop. The episodes opened my eyes to new ways of editing a picture and making it stand out. Aaron covers absolutely everything there is to know about the program!

The Flood Pro episode that I have purchased showed me the process of making an image (explanation of the light sources was very helpful), as well as the post production. I learned how to make the model look perfect yet natural, I learned about making a composite and how to create a mood for the picture, as well as many more ways of creating a photograph that I still use today.

I highly recommend getting a Phlearn Pro to anyone who is interested in taking their creativity to the next level!

More Phlearn Pro Tutorials are better than ice cream. I've been using Photoshop professionally for 15 years. Of all the sources of information on Photography and Photoshop I like Phlearn the best. Why? While most tutorials teach "How" to do things, Phlearn Pro tutorials teach "How" and "Why".

Now that Aaron is including concept, preproduction, and photo shoot knowledge into the tutorials you get more than a simple trick you can do. It's more like learning along side a photographer and peeking into their mind.

More I appreciate the quality/thoroughness of the pro tutorials here at Phlearn. They are a phenomenal value for the money. I should know -- so far I've purchased 11 of them.

I've purchased many photoshop tutorials and PHLEARN is (in my opinion), are the best value for the money by FAR.Love the entire Phlearn site as well. If there is time in my day to only check out one site, It’s going to be PHLEARN.

Thanks to you and your team for all you do!

More PHLEARN is awesome!

First off, Aaron is a character. I've watched a lot of other photoshop tutorials, but Aaron keeps it entertaining, supportive, and positive. All of that is really important for creating a learning environment that has worked for me. It's weird - watching a PHLEARN PRO episode is super-entertaining. I might honestly watch them even if I wasn't trying to learn... but as Mary Poppins once said: a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down!

And does it ever! I've gone from being intimidated by Photoshop to feeling confident using the many different tools, techniques, and strategies that Aaron demonstrates. No, more than that - now I feel confident exploring and experimenting in Photoshop.

I want to thank Aaron and the rest of the crew at PHLEARN for what they are building, and how much they have already taught me. Thanks guys!

More I've been a photographer for a long time and have been using Photoshop since its first incarnation. I thought I pretty much had it covered. Turns out, not so much. I'm pretty new to the site but I have learned so much from watching Aaron's free videos that it was a simple decision to purchase the PRO tutorials and I'm so glad I did. The quality of the production and level of content is awesome; in depth but clearly explained.

Aaron has such an easy, natural way of presenting information that you can't help but feel you're being personally tutored by someone who really knows and loves his craft.

Save your money on books, stop looking at 10 minute blurry Youtube clips and spend some time with PRO. You'll learn more from one PRO tutorial than you will from most books out there combined. Where can you possibly get between 2-3 hours of professional tutoring per video that you can refer to over and over again for under $25 (even cheaper when he has a sale)? 'Nuff said.
