Streamline Your Workflow

Edit With Freedom
If you’ve watched a PHLEARN tutorial before, you might have heard us talk about the importance of a non-destructive workflow. But what does it mean? Simply put, it means working in a way that allows you to make changes to your image without ever permanently overwriting the original pixel data. In this tutorial we’ll show you our must-go tools and techniques that will help you work faster, smarter, and with the freedom to change your mind at any stage of the creative process.
Smart Objects
The first thing we always do when editing is convert our layers into Smart Objects. Think of them as a protective container for your pixels, allowing you to apply filters and transforms nondestructively. We’ll show you exactly how to set up this workflow so you can change your mind at any stage without ever damaging your original image.
Unbreakable Blueprint
This is all about setting up a professional structure from the very first layer. We’ll show you how to organize your PSD so every single change, from the background to the subject, stays fully adjustable. This ensures you can return to your work years later and still make perfect edits.

Organization & Grouping
Stop losing track of your edits in a sea of messy layers! We’ll show you how to master naming, color-coding, and grouping to keep even the most complex projects clean and professional. This essential habit makes your workflow faster and ensures any collaborator can navigate your files.
Layer Masks
Learn to hide and show parts of an image without ever deleting a single pixel. We’ll show you how to use Layer Masks to blend photos and isolate subjects with total precision. Our technique gives you the freedom to fine-tune your images at any stage, ensuring your original pixels stay perfectly safe!
Adjustment Layers
Adjustment Layers act as a dynamic “lens” over your photo, allowing you to refine color, exposure, and contrast without altering a single pixel. We’ll show you how to leverage these layers to maintain total creative control, giving you the flexibility to fine-tune your vision at any stage of the editing process.
Stay In Control
Lead Your Workflow
We’ll show you how to use powerful AI tools while keeping total command over your work. This ensures you stay in the driver’s seat of every creative decision.

Incorporating AI Tools
Tools like Generative Fill and Expand are inherently nondestructive. Since they automatically generate content on new, dedicated layers, they’re the perfect fit for keeping your workflow flexible and your original pixels safe. In this tutorial, you’ll learn to use these AI tools to seamlessly add, extend or swap elements while keeping your original photo perfectly intact.
Selection Tools
In a professional workflow, selection tools are the foundation of control. We will show you how to use the Object Selection Tool and Selection Brush properly to define active areas without ever altering your original pixels. This approach keeps your project flexible, allowing you to turn any selection into a Layer Mask that can be refined or adjusted later.
Removing Distractions
We’ll show you how to clean up your images properly using the Remove Tool with Generative AI enabled. By working on a new blank layer with Sample All Layers checked, your retouches stay completely separate from the source, giving you perfect results while keeping your original photo untouched.

BEFORE
Nondestructive Filters
Learn how to apply effects like Gaussian Blur to Smart Objects, which automatically turns them into Smart Filters. This technique is completely nondestructive; it keeps your original pixels safe while allowing you to toggle the effect off or on or double-click to refine the settings at any time.
Adobe Camera RAW
In this tutorial, we’ll even cover Adobe Camera Raw as a completely nondestructive gateway. We’ll show you how to pull every bit of information from your digital camera while keeping the original ‘digital negative’ intact. This gives you the ultimate power to jump back and refine your exposure or color balance at any stage of the edit.

I love your instructions and I do understand the need to include AI. I do however just turn off your video when the 40 credit nano banana sky replacement begins. I am a CC member at a level with 25 credits. I do not need a 40 credit instruction. How many people who subscribe to your instruction as I have for several years have that many credits. I use CC regularly across all the programs. What I need from you is how to use those tools without AI. Again, I don’t have the credits to follow and copy your lessons now. I have loved them in the past but if AI is going to be your focus there is no need for me to subscribe. Thanks and will continue to subscribe…….for awhile.
Hey there! Thanks so much for being a long-time subscriber! We completely hear you.
Our goal is always to show you the most efficient ways to work, which often includes new AI tools, but we are fully committed to teaching the manual, “old school” methods too. Our team will reach out to you via email to see what you’re looking to learn so they can suggest some manual tools tutorials.
Excellent description. I thought I was working non destructively but I have now learned some new tools / ways. Thank You.
best teacher on photoshop by far. thank you for all your hard work and keep the tutorials coming
Fastening and educational. I thought I was familiar with Photoshop but often resulted in using some destructive actions. I now know how to work nondestructively. Thanks so much!
I used Photoshop in the past, took a break to focus on other tools, and began using again last year. I’ve learned a lot, especially through your guidance. I really enjoyed all the courses from PhLearn. Especially the part about Camera RAW was an eye opener, please keep tutorials like this coming. Thank you.
Great coverage and quick review of several nondestructive editing techniques, focusing on generative fill, smart objects and adobe camera raw. Useful hints for compositing.
Great refresher course with enough new nuggets to make it very worthwhile. If your like me and have got into the habit of flattening an image and moving on- Arron makes a great case for taking advantage of the Smart Object.
I have been using Photoshop for a few years now and have picked up so much more knowledge with these videos. Thanks Aaron
