Retouching Learning Path
Ten tutorials on professional portrait and beauty retouching in Photoshop. Learn a non-destructive workflow first, then work through skin, eyes, hair, clothing and fabric, frequency separation, dodging and burning, and the full commercial beauty edit.
What You’ll Learn
The Retouching Learning Path is ten tutorials on making a person look like themselves on their best day, which is a harder brief than making them look flawless. It begins with a non-destructive workflow, because the difference between amateur and professional retouching is usually not the technique but whether the file can still be revised after the client sees it. From there it works feature by feature — skin, eyes, hair, clothing — and finishes with a complete commercial beauty edit.
- Build a non-destructive workflow Layer structure, grouping, masking and naming, so an edit can be revisited, revised or partially undone weeks later.
- Retouch skin without plastic Frequency separation explained properly — what the two layers actually hold, why it goes wrong, and how to keep pores and texture while removing blemishes.
- Dodge and burn like a retoucher Not a contrast trick but a sculpting technique: evening out tonal transitions, shaping features, and correcting light that the camera recorded unevenly.
- Correct exposure after the fact Recovering underexposed and overexposed portraits in Photoshop, including the areas most people give up on.
- Retouch eyes Brightening, sharpening and cleaning up eyes at a level that still reads as photographic rather than illustrated.
- Retouch hair Flyaways, gaps, edges and volume — the part of portrait retouching that takes the longest and is skipped the most.
- Retouch clothing and fabric Removing wrinkles, fixing folds and rebuilding fabric texture, which matters as much in commercial work as skin does.
- Master sharpening Where to sharpen, how much, and how to sharpen selectively for print and for screen without introducing halos.
- Complete a professional beauty edit The full workflow start to finish on a beauty image, at the standard commercial clients expect.
Who This Path Is For
Portrait, wedding, headshot and beauty photographers who deliver retouched files, and retouchers working on other people’s images. If your skin work looks smooth but flat, or your edits fall apart when a client asks for a change three layers back, both problems are addressed early in the path.
It assumes you can already use layers, masks and basic selections in Photoshop. If you cannot, the Photoshop Learning Path covers that ground first and this path picks up directly from it.
Retouching is also a service you can sell independently of shooting. Several of these tutorials are structured around client deliverables rather than personal work, which matters if you plan to charge for it.
What You Need
- Photoshop Any recent version. Frequency separation, dodging and burning and the rest have worked the same way for years.
- A graphics tablet Recommended but not required. Dodging, burning and hair work are noticeably easier with pressure sensitivity.
- Sample files Included, so you retouch the same images as the instructor and can compare your result to theirs.
- Layers and masks Assumed knowledge. Everything else is taught.
A calibrated monitor becomes worth having once you are delivering work to clients, since skin tones are where an uncalibrated display does the most damage.
How Long It Takes
Ten tutorials, with the professional workflow and beauty retouching lessons being the longest. Most people work through the path in five to seven weeks and keep returning to individual tutorials as specific jobs come up.
Retouching rewards repetition more than most skills here. Watching the eyes tutorial once teaches the technique; retouching thirty pairs of eyes is what makes it fast.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a PHLEARN PRO membership?
Yes. This is a PRO Learning Path, so all ten tutorials and their sample files are included with a membership.
Is frequency separation still worth learning?
Yes, when it is used correctly — as one tool among several rather than a one-click smoothing method. The tutorial covers where it is the right choice and where dodging and burning gives a better result.
Do I need a drawing tablet?
No, but it helps. Everything can be done with a mouse or trackpad; hair and dodge and burn work simply take longer.
Will AI tools replace this?
AI handles removal and cleanup well and skin texture badly. The judgment this path teaches — how much to change and where to stop — is what determines whether a retouched portrait still looks like a photograph.
Can I start anywhere?
Yes, though the professional workflow tutorial is worth doing first regardless of where you go next. It sets up the layer structure every other tutorial assumes.
