Portrait, wedding, headshot and beauty photographers who deliver retouched files, and retouchers working on other people’s images. If your skin work looks smooth but flat, or your edits fall apart when a client asks for a change three layers back, both problems are addressed early in the path.

The first tutorial is written for beginners, so you only need to be able to open an image and work with layers. If Photoshop itself is new to you, the Photoshop Learning Path covers the basics first.

Retouching is also a service you can sell independently of shooting. Several of these tutorials are structured around client deliverables rather than personal work, which matters if you plan to charge for it.

What You Need

• Photoshop A current version for the AI tools in the first tutorial. Frequency separation, dodging and burning and the rest have worked the same way for years.
• A graphics tablet Recommended but not required. Dodging, burning and hair work are noticeably easier with pressure sensitivity.
• Sample files Included, so you retouch the same images as the instructor and can compare your result to theirs.
• Layers Basic comfort with layers. Everything else is taught.

A calibrated monitor becomes worth having once you are delivering work to clients, since skin tones are where an uncalibrated display does the most damage.

How Long It Takes

Eight tutorials, 90 lessons and a little over 28 hours of video. Frequency separation is the longest at almost seven hours. At a few hours a week, most people finish the path in five to seven weeks and keep returning to individual tutorials as specific jobs come up.

Retouching rewards repetition more than most skills here. Watching the hair tutorial once teaches the technique; retouching thirty portraits is what makes it fast.

Do I have to follow the order?

It is built to be followed in order: the workflow in step two sets up the layer structure every later tutorial assumes. If you already retouch professionally, you can jump to the skill you need.

Do I need a drawing tablet?

No, but it helps. Everything can be done with a mouse or trackpad; hair and dodge and burn work simply take longer.
