What You Need

• Photoshop Any recent version. Some lessons use newer AI selection tools and note the manual alternative.
• Layers and masks Assumed knowledge. Compositing is almost entirely masking, so comfort with masks matters more than any other prerequisite.
• Sample files Included, so you can work on the same source images and compare edges against the instructor’s.
• A camera Optional. The group portrait tutorial covers the shooting side, which is easier to apply with your own frames.

A graphics tablet is helpful for shadow painting but is not required; the shadow tutorial uses gradients and soft brushes that work with a mouse.

Can AI selection tools do this for me?

They handle the easy eighty percent of a cutout and struggle with hair, transparency and edge color contamination. More importantly, they do nothing about shadows and light matching, which is where composites actually give themselves away.

Do I need to shoot the source images myself?

No. Sample files are provided. Shooting your own becomes useful once you reach the group portrait tutorial, which covers what to capture on set to make the composite easy later.

Do I have to watch them in order?

No, but starting with Compositing 101 is worth it. The later tutorials assume you already know why perspective and light direction have to match.
