PRO Photoshop Tutorial
You don’t need to have thousands of dollars worth of equipment to make an amazing image, all it takes is an imagination.
Chad North won our contest to have his image made into a Phlearn PRO + $100. The original image was taken with a film camera, in a living room with lamps used for lighting. Chad had a great concept and posed the subject (his father) well, knowing that all of the magic could be done in Photoshop.
This tutorial is all about bringing the magic.
Something From Nothing
For this photo, we needed an anvil, or something the blacksmith was pounding on. It is not always necessary to find something that is exactly what you need, often times you can transform other objects to make them appear correct.
In this image we use a photo of a rusty razor blade as the anvil. You will learn how to cut out, light, color, shape, and sculpt objects like this to get them to blend perfectly into your image.
Color Is Hard
Really, it is. There are Hundreds of Millions of Colors available, and getting yours to be exactly right will probably be one of the hardest things you will do in post production. For this image we completely color the background, and every other element to get them all in the same space.
If you have ever had issues matching colors, this is the most complete explanation of how to do it ever made. You will learn countless methods and tricks to help your colors stay true.
Levels are far more powerful than what most people think, I am still discovering what they can do. You will learn how to take virtually any photo and have it blend perfectly into your scene, often with just one levels layer.
Do You Like Dragons?
I do too. It is really amazing how easy it is to make this sort of thing in photoshop. In this case we are adding dragons to an image, but these techniques will work for birds, or anything else you want to place in the backgrounds of your photos. Making them from scratch is actually really fun.
Maybe too fun – I get really excited in the video at this stage.
This is the perfect chance to see how lighting effects an image. We take apart the lighting from the original scene, and match it in the final. When you are able to match lighting correctly, you will be well on your way to making a composite believable.
Details and Atmosphere
The best way to pull an image like this together is through all the little details, and how they interact with the other objects in the scene. Not only do we add all these sparks, but also the smoke and particles surrounding them.
With the included custom brushes, you will be able to make this sort of thing very easily, and see what a difference it wil make in the final image.
E pluribus unum
“Out of many, one” – None of the images used in this final look anything like this image. None of them are colored correctly, none of them are lit correctly. You will learn how to see the possibilities in everything. All of these images are used in this final, making the image come to life.
By learning what can be done with regular images, you will have a much better chance of finding that “right” image for your composite. Often finding out that it doesn’t have to be as “right” as you thought it did.
