New Select Subject Tool
The new Select Subject tool is a game-changer for photographers. We’ll show you how to leverage this incredible feature to make precise, professional-quality edits. Learn to instantly isolate your subject and apply targeted enhancements to both your subject and background, transforming your photos with unprecedented speed and accuracy.
Set Up Photoshop
Before you begin, make sure your software is configured to use the cloud-based AI. First, look for the Contextual Taskbar at the bottom of your screen; if you don’t see it, go to Window > Contextual Taskbar. Next, go to Settings > Image Processing and make sure Cloud is selected for both Select Subject and Remove Background. This will provide highly detailed and accurate results for your edits.
Enhance Your Subject
Once your settings are correct, it’s time to select your subject. With your image open, simply click Select Subject in the Contextual Taskbar. Photoshop will automatically create a precise selection. To enhance your subject, add an adjustment layer like Curves, Levels, or Brightness/Contrast. The selection will automatically load into the adjustment layer’s mask. You can then brighten your subject, adjust shadows, and make other targeted edits.
Edit the Background
After enhancing your subject, you can also edit your background. Use the Select Subject tool again, then click Invert Selection in the Contextual Taskbar. This will switch your selection to the background. Now, you can add a new adjustment layer or a gradient to change the look of the background without affecting your subject. For a stunning effect, try using a Levels adjustment layer or the Radial Gradient tool to add a creative light flare or a touch of color.
