How to Install Your LUTs
A short PDF that walks you through loading this pack in Photoshop, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro, plus two tips for better results.
DESCRIPTION
Add style, mystery, and drama to your photos and videos with our Film Noir Color Grading LUTs.
All five warm the image slightly and most darken the midtones: Cool Mocha darkens blue skies the most, Crisp Sable gives skin the richest color, Muted Ebony lifts the blacks and has the darkest midtones, and Warm Onyx shifts greens furthest toward yellow. After you apply one, lower the layer opacity in Photoshop or the LUT intensity in your video app if the look is too strong.
One zip holds the 5 LUTs as .CUBE files for Photoshop’s Color Lookup, the same 5 in .3DL, .CSP, .CUBE and .ICC for video and other apps, plus 4 sample images to practice on and the PDF install guide.

Film Noir LUTs · 5 Looks
Darker Midtones and Rich, Earthy Color
Five LUTs that darken the midtones for a moody, film-like feel, some warm and some neutral. Use them on photos and video in Photoshop, Premiere, Final Cut and DaVinci Resolve.

Muted Ebony
Muted Ebony darkens the whole scene for a heavier, moodier feel. The grass, trees and water fall into deeper greens, the tan coat gets richer, and the white dress drops to a soft off-white while the bright sky holds. It is the darkest LUT in the pack.
Faded Blacks, Darker Midtones
Pure black lifts to about 10 percent for a matte, faded base, while middle gray drops from 50 to 38 percent. The result is a dark, compressed look with no harsh blacks.
Neutral Color, Deeper Skin
Only a slight warmth is added in the midtones. Every color gets darker, and greens lose about a fifth of their saturation. Light skin gets darker and noticeably more saturated, so faces read warm and tanned against the darker greens, while deep skin darkens and loses a little color.
Best on: outdoor couple photos, lakeside and park scenes, and bright daylight shots you want to feel more serious.

Warm Onyx
Warm Onyx warms the grass and leans it toward olive, and her red hair turns a deeper, richer copper. Skin keeps its color with a little more warmth, and the black top stays solid. It keeps the brightest midtones in the pack, with middle gray at 47 percent.
Greens Shift Toward Yellow
Greens rotate toward yellow, lose a little saturation and get darker, which turns bright grass into a warmer olive and deepens the shadows in the foliage. Yellows also move toward orange and lose some brightness.
A Gentle Orange Cast
A light orange tint runs through the midtones, with a slighter warmth in the shadows and highlights, while pure black and white stay in place. Reds and oranges gain about 15 percent saturation, which deepens red hair and warm skin. Light and deep skin both turn richer.
Best on: portraits lying in grass or foliage, red or auburn hair, and late-afternoon light outdoors.

Deep Opal
Deep Opal gives the misty road a warmer, peach-colored glow and darkens the couple slightly against it. The mustard hoodie gets a little richer, and his gray sweatshirt stays close to neutral. Contrast barely changes, so the mood comes from color.
Softer Blacks and Whites
Black lifts to about 4 percent and the brightest whites come down to 96 percent, so the frame never hits pure black or pure white. The midtones get a little darker in between, with middle gray at 46 percent.
Warm Fog, Quieter Blues
An orange and red tint runs through the middle tones, with a lighter warmth in the shadows and highlights, and blues lose about a fifth of their saturation, so cool areas fade back behind the warm haze. Greens and purples quiet down too, while reds, oranges and skin pick up a little richness.
Best on: foggy or hazy scenes, couple portraits, and moody roadside or forest settings.

Crisp Sable
Crisp Sable deepens the trees and the water and makes the leather backpack a richer orange. Her denim jacket gets darker, skin warms up, and the driftwood keeps its pale highlights. It adds the most contrast in the pack.
Dark Greens and Blues
Greens drop from 50 to 32 percent brightness and blues to about 38 percent, which pushes foliage and water back. Greens also lose about a quarter of their saturation. Midtones get darker overall while the whites stay bright.
Richer Warm Colors
Reds, oranges and yellows gain more saturation, about a fifth on average, and an orange tint sits in the midtones, with a slighter warmth in the shadows. Leather, wood and skin stand out against the cooler surroundings, and light skin gains more richness here than with any other LUT in the pack.
Best on: travel photos, lakeside and forest scenes, and portraits with leather, wood or other warm textures.

Cool Mocha
Cool Mocha darkens the whole frame for a quieter, heavier mood. The overcast sky and the water fall to a deeper gray-blue, his jacket shows more of its olive green, and their white hair keeps its detail. Contrast rises only slightly.
Darker From Top to Bottom
Middle gray drops from 50 to 40 percent and the brightest whites ease down to 96 percent, with only a slight warmth in the midtones. It works like pulling the exposure down while keeping the blacks clean.
Richer Warm Tones and Skin
Reds and oranges gain about a tenth more saturation as they darken, while yellows and greens hold theirs. Blues lose about a quarter of their color, the most in the pack, and aquas about a fifth. Skin turns deeper and warmer, which keeps faces from looking gray under a dull sky.
Best on: overcast days, seaside and waterfront scenes, and quiet portraits of couples outdoors.

LUT Questions, Answered
What’s included in the Film Noir LUTs?
The pack includes 5 LUTs: Cool Mocha, Crisp Sable, Muted Ebony, Deep Opal and Warm Onyx. Each LUT comes as .CUBE, .3DL, .CSP and .ICC files, so it works in Photoshop, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro and most other editors.
What mood are the Film Noir LUTs made for?
They are made to add style, mystery and drama to photos and videos. The looks bring in deep shadows and cool tones for a cool, dramatic feel. The featured look on the page is Muted Ebony, and the before and after examples show all five LUTs in the pack.
Can I use the Film Noir LUTs on video as well as photos?
Yes. The Film Noir LUTs are listed for photo and video. A LUT replaces each color with another based on its RGB value, pixel by pixel, so the same look can be applied to a still image or a clip. The page names video editors such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro X among the compatible apps.
Are LUTs included in my PHLEARN PRO subscription?
Yes. A PHLEARN PRO membership includes every LUT pack, plus PRO Tutorials, Lightroom Presets, Photoshop Actions and Photoshop Brushes.
Which programs do the LUTs work in?
Photoshop, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Lightroom Classic and most other photo and video editors. Use the .CUBE file unless your software asks for .3DL, .CSP or .ICC.
How do I use a LUT in Photoshop?
Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Lookup, open the 3DLUT File menu in the Properties panel, choose Load 3D LUT and pick a .CUBE file from the Photoshop Quick Install folder. Set the strength with the layer’s Opacity.
How do I install LUTs in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro?
The PDF install guide in your download has a page for each one, and every step for every program is on our How to Install LUTs page.
The LUT looks too strong. What do I do?
Turn it down: lower the layer Opacity in Photoshop, the Intensity slider in Premiere Pro or the Mix slider in Final Cut Pro. In DaVinci Resolve, reduce Key Output Gain for that node.
Should I correct my photo before adding a LUT?
Yes. Set exposure and white balance first, then add the LUT on top. A LUT grades color; it does not correct it.
My LUTs don’t show up in DaVinci Resolve.
Skipping Update Lists is the usual reason. Open Project Settings > Color Management, click Update Lists, then Save.
Do you offer refunds?
Because these are downloadable products, all sales are final and we are not able to offer refunds.
