DESCRIPTION

Greys don’t have to be neutral. Add steely tones, muted coloring, and soft contrast to your photos in just a few clicks.

Every preset reduces contrast, and most pull down bright highlights and darken the corners of the frame, so they suit cloudy shorelines, outfit shots against plain walls and overcast city portraits. After you apply one, raise Shadows if dark clothing turns muddy.

One zip holds the 10 presets as .xmp files, which work in Lightroom Classic, Lightroom on your computer and Lightroom on your phone, plus .dng versions for older releases of the mobile app, each in its own labeled folder, with 4 sample images to practice on and the PDF install guide.

Moody Grey Lightroom Presets · 10 Looks

Cool Blue-Grey Tones With Muted Color

Ten presets that lower contrast, cool the highlights with blue and mute greens and blues for a steely, quiet look. They work in Lightroom Classic and in Lightroom on desktop and mobile.

Included – PHLEARN Warm GreyOriginal

Warm Grey

Warm Grey turns this cloudy shoreline steely and calm. The sea and sky lose their blue and settle into soft gray, the wet sand deepens, and her white top and sunlit arms stay clean and warm. Contrast eases by 24, and white balance stays unchanged.

Blues and Aquas Drained

Blue saturation drops by 96 and aqua by 91, and both get much darker, which is what turns the water gray. Highlights come down by 50 and the tone curve deepens the shadows. Greens lose 67 of their saturation, and purples and magentas lose 82.

Skin Kept Warm

Oranges and yellows get brighter, so skin and the peach rose glow against the cool background. A yellow tint sits in the shadows to balance the blue tint in the highlights. Overall saturation drops by 20 and vibrance by 15.

Best on: beach and coastal portraits on cloudy days, white clothing and photos with dark hair.

Included – PHLEARN Tundra GreyOriginal

Tundra Grey

Tundra Grey gives this bright, colorful portrait a cooler and calmer finish. The white brick wall turns a light blue-gray, the orange hijab softens to a lighter apricot, and the patterned scarf stays rich in detail. Exposure dips slightly, by 0.12 stop.

Cool Tint, Gentle Contrast

A blue tint goes into both the highlights and the shadows, and contrast drops by 52. The tone curve darkens the shadows a little and rolls the brightest whites down, so walls lose their glare. A light vignette darkens the edges a little.

Oranges Brighten, Blues Fade

Oranges get a little brighter, which keeps skin and warm fabric lively. Blues and greens lose much of their saturation, so cool background color drops away. Yellows get a little lighter too, while overall saturation drops by just 7.

Best on: indoor portraits of couples and friends, colorful scarves and textiles, and brick or concrete backdrops.

Woman in a red beret and gray jacket reading "Wild Feminist" sitting on a bed, after the Nimbus Grey preset is applied
Included – PHLEARN Nimbus GreyOriginal

Nimbus Grey

Nimbus Grey lays a cool blue-gray cast across this outfit shot. The warm plaster wall turns a smooth slate, the gray jacket picks up a steely tone, and the red beret loses some of its punch. Exposure dips by 0.12 stop.

Highlights and Whites Way Down

Highlights drop by 83, whites by 52 and contrast by 64, so bright walls and fabric settle into soft mid grays. A strong blue tint in the highlights creates the slate color, and a vignette darkens the edges. The point curve holds the brightest white just below pure white.

Reds Muted, Not Removed

Red saturation drops by 47 while reds get a little lighter, so a bold accent stays visible but quieter. Greens and blues lose much of their color. Oranges lose 20 of their saturation, and blues turn much darker.

Best on: fashion and outfit shots, plain walls and interiors, and photos with one strong accent color.

Included – PHLEARN Midnight GreyOriginal

Midnight Grey

Midnight Grey brings this close-up portrait forward against a darker backdrop. The textured background sinks into deep charcoal, her skin turns lighter and cleaner, the orange makeup softens and the white jacket takes on a crisp, cool tone. Vibrance drops by 12, which calms the color slightly.

Deeper Shadows on the Curve

The tone curve pulls the shadows down while highlights drop by 79 and contrast by 45, so dark areas get heavier but bright skin and fabric keep their detail. Shadows rise by 19 at the same time, while whites barely move.

Brighter Oranges, Cool Tint

Oranges and yellows get lighter, which lifts the face. A blue tint goes into both the shadows and highlights, and greens and blues lose much of their color. Yellows also shift toward orange, and a very faint vignette barely touches the edges.

Best on: close-up beauty portraits, dark or busy backgrounds and photos with dark hair.

Woman sitting on a bed inside a camper van looking out at mountains, after the Metallic Grey preset is applied
Included – PHLEARN Metallic GreyOriginal

Metallic Grey

Metallic Grey gives this mountain view from the van a cool, steely calm. The green forest fades toward gray-teal, the peaks and lake turn a cooler gray-blue, and her hair and skin keep a gentle warmth. Vibrance drops by 15 and a light vignette darkens the edges.

Contrast Cut Deep

Contrast drops by 79 and blacks lift by 21, so the dark van interior and the bright window view sit closer together. Highlights actually rise by 12, while the tone curve pulls the shadows down. A teal tint goes into the shadows and a blue tint into the highlights.

Greens and Aquas Fade

Aqua saturation drops by 91, greens and blues lose much of theirs, and yellows swing toward orange. Oranges get a little brighter, keeping skin and warm wood from going gray. Reds lose 47 of their saturation, and purples and magentas lose 82.

Best on: van-life and travel scenes, mountain and forest views, and window-framed landscapes.

Man in sunglasses and a graphic hoodie leaning against a wall, before the Horizon Grey preset is applied
Man in sunglasses and a graphic hoodie leaning against a wall, after the Horizon Grey preset is applied
Included – PHLEARN Horizon GreyOriginal

Horizon Grey

Horizon Grey pulls this bright street portrait down into cool, quiet grays. The white wall turns a light blue-gray, the ripped jeans shift to a muted gray-blue, and the black hoodie and headphones stay solid. A light vignette darkens the edges, and the tint leans green.

Darker and Softer Overall

Exposure drops by 0.60, highlights by 74 and whites by 50, and contrast falls by 67, so a glaring white wall settles into an even gray. The tone curve also lifts the shadows and darks regions. A strong blue tint in the highlights gives it the cool cast.

Blues Muted, Skin Kept

Blues and aquas lose much of their saturation, which takes the brightness out of light denim. Temperature actually warms a little, so skin keeps its color under the cool highlights. Yellows and greens lose most of their color too.

Best on: streetwear and urban portraits, light walls and photos with dark clothing.

Lightroom Preset Questions, Answered

What’s included in the Moody Grey Lightroom Presets?

The Moody Grey Lightroom Presets include 10 presets: Burnt Grey, Dior Grey, Hope Grey, Horizon Grey, Metallic Grey, Midnight Grey, Nimbus Grey, Slate Grey, Tundra Grey and Warm Grey. They come as .XMP presets for Lightroom Classic, Lightroom desktop and Lightroom on your phone, plus .DNG versions for older versions of the mobile app, and the download includes sample images to practice on.

What kind of photos are the Moody Grey Lightroom Presets made for?

Photos where grays can help tell a story, such as rocky mountains, architecture and morning fog. The presets add steely tones, muted coloring and soft contrast for a soft yet evocative look, built on the idea that grays don’t have to be neutral. Tundra Grey is the featured look on this page.

Which Moody Grey Lightroom Presets are shown on this page?

The before-and-after examples show Tundra Grey, the featured look, along with Horizon Grey, Metallic Grey, Midnight Grey, Nimbus Grey and Warm Grey. That covers 6 of the 10 presets, so you can see how the different grays compare before trying them on your own photos.

Are Lightroom Presets included in my PHLEARN PRO subscription?

Which version of Lightroom do I need?

The .XMP presets work in Lightroom Classic 7.3 and newer, in Lightroom on your computer and in Lightroom on your phone. For older versions of the mobile app, use the .DNG files in the download. We recommend the latest version.

How do I install Lightroom Presets?

In Lightroom Classic, open the Develop module, click the + in the Presets panel, choose Import Presets and select the .XMP files. The PDF install guide in your download covers Lightroom on your computer and your phone too, and every method is on our Lightroom Presets install guide.

I imported the pack, but I can’t see it.

The new group arrives collapsed and sits in alphabetical order. Scroll the Presets panel, find the group named after the pack and click its arrow.

Do I have to install the presets on my phone separately?

Not if you import them into Lightroom on your computer: within a few minutes they show up in Lightroom on any device signed in to the same Adobe account. If you use Lightroom Classic, import the .XMP files in the mobile app: open a photo, tap Presets, then Yours, then the three-dot menu and Import Presets.

Do the presets work on RAW and JPEG photos?

Yes. Every preset is built to work on both RAW and JPEG files, and each one can be adjusted after you apply it.

The preset looks too strong. What do I do?

Lower the Amount slider at the top of the Presets panel, then adjust White Balance and Exposure for that photo. Every photo starts from different light.

Do you offer refunds?

Because these are downloadable products, all sales are final and we are not able to offer refunds.
