Rotate, Match & Blend
This guide explores a specific three-step workflow combining Photoshop’s Rotate Object, Harmonize, and Generative Fill features. We’ll look at how these particular tools interact to manage perspective, ambient lighting, and contact shadows, giving you a clear view of how they operate together.
Adjust 3D Perspective
1. First, bring your product image into your background file.
2. Grab the Object Selection Tool from the toolbar on the left, click on your product to create a selection, and press Ctrl/Cmd + J to duplicate it onto a clean, isolated layer.
3. To fix a mismatched angle, press Ctrl/Cmd + T to open the Free Transform box.
4. Look at your Contextual Taskbar (if you don’t see it, go to Window > Contextual Taskbar) and click Rotate Object. This tool lets you fluidly tilt, turn, and use a perspective warp slider to match the original camera angle of your background scene.
5. Click Done to let Photoshop enhance the resolution of your newly rotated object.
Match Ambient Lighting
Once the object is sitting at the correct angle, you will notice that its highlights and colors still don’t quite fit the new environment.
6. Make sure you are on your rotated product layer and click Harmonize directly inside the Contextual Taskbar. This feature analyzes the background image and automatically adjusts the color temperature and tones of your subject to match.
7. The Properties window will generate three different variations for you to click through. If you want to see more options, simply click the Generate button until you find the lighting variation that looks the most natural.
Blend Ground Shadows
The final step is fixing the area where your object actually touches the surface.
8. Switch to the Selection Brush Tool by pressing L, adjust your brush size using the open and close bracket keys [ or ], and paint directly over the unrealistic contact point and the immediate ground around it.
9. Click Generative Fill in the taskbar, type the word “shadow” into the prompt box, and hit generate. Firefly will create a realistic shadow that physically ties your product to the surface, seamlessly completing your composite.
