Graphics & Text Learning Path
Photoshop for design work: layer styles, clean cutouts, object removal and fast background swaps. From there you will composite text and graphics into photographs and build logos, realistic mockups and text effects that hold up in client work.
What You’ll Learn
Putting type or a logo onto a photograph is easy. Making it look like it belongs there — like it was painted on the wall, printed on the shirt, or lit by the same lamp as everything else — is a different skill, and it is what separates design that reads as professional from design that reads as a sticker. These eight tutorials cover both halves: creating the graphic elements, and integrating them convincingly.
- Master layer styles Every layer effect explained with practical examples, including photorealistic text on surfaces rather than the default drop-shadow look.
- Cut out cleanly Isolating subjects from simple backgrounds, recovering fine detail in hair, and building edges that survive close inspection.
- Remove what shouldn’t be there Unwanted logos, branding and distractions, using the Healing Brush, Clone Stamp and content-aware tools appropriately.
- Change backgrounds quickly Cutting people out, placing them in new environments, and matching the lighting so the swap holds up.
- Composite text and graphics into photos The central skill of the path — perspective, surface texture, lighting and wear, so type sits in the scene instead of on top of it.
- Design logos and graphics from scratch Shapes, type, color and gradients used to build original marks inside Photoshop.
- Create realistic effects Lens flares, sun rays and glows that support a design instead of overwhelming it.
- Work non-destructively Smart objects and editable type throughout, so a client revision is a five-minute change rather than a rebuild.
Who This Series Is For
Photographers who are being asked to deliver more than a photograph — a banner, a cover, a social graphic, a mockup with the client’s logo on it. The compositing techniques here are the ones that make those deliverables look considered.
It equally suits designers and marketers who work in Photoshop but came to it from layout rather than photography, and who want their type to sit convincingly inside an image rather than floating above it.
Basic Photoshop familiarity is assumed — layers, masks, the type tool. Everything beyond that is taught.
What You Need
- Photoshop Any recent version. Several lessons use newer selection tools, with manual alternatives shown.
- Fonts Whatever you have. The principles apply to any typeface; nothing here depends on a specific font license.
- Sample files Included, so you can follow along on the same images and layered files.
- No drawing ability The logo tutorial builds everything from shapes and type, not freehand illustration.
A graphics tablet is useful for masking but genuinely optional — nothing in this path requires one.
How Long It Takes
Eight tutorials, most of them a couple of hours. Three to five weeks is a comfortable pace, and the path splits cleanly in half if you want to spread it out.
The first four tutorials are the technical foundation — layer styles, cutouts, removal, background swaps. The last four are applied design work that builds on them. If you already cut out and clean up confidently, you can start at the compositing tutorial without missing anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a PHLEARN PRO membership?
Yes. This is a PRO Learning Path, so the tutorials and their sample files are included with a membership.
Do I need Illustrator for the logo work?
No. The logo and graphics tutorial is built entirely in Photoshop using shape layers and type. Illustrator is the more conventional tool for vector logos, but nothing in this path requires it.
Do I have to watch them in order?
The order moves from technical foundations to applied design and is worth following the first time through. Each tutorial does stand alone if you need something specific today.
Will this help with social media graphics?
Directly. Compositing text into images, quick background changes and non-destructive editable files are exactly what makes producing a run of social assets fast rather than painful.
Is removing logos from photos allowed?
The techniques are taught for legitimate purposes — cleaning up incidental branding in your own photographs, removing distractions, and preparing images where you have the rights. What you do with someone else’s intellectual property is a separate question, and worth taking seriously.
Where to Go Next
