What You’ll Learn

Every photo has something in it that should not be there: a sign, a tourist, a power line, a seam in the backdrop, a scratch on an old print. The Object Removal & Cleanup Learning Path is seven tutorials that go from the one-click tools to repainting a background by hand, in the order the difficulty rises. By the end you will know which tool to reach for first, what to do when it fails, and how to judge when Generative Fill is the right answer and when it is not.

  • 1. Start with the automatic tools Spot Healing, Content-Aware Fill and the Remove tool on simple distractions, with the habits that keep edges clean.
  • 2. Rebuild a background by hand Custom brushes, the Clone Stamp and Patch tools when the automatic tools smear or repeat.
  • 3. Remove something large Repainting and compositing stock imagery into the gap, with matched light, texture and grain.
  • 4. Learn every removal technique Twenty lessons of real examples, from landscape distractions to people in crowds, so you have a method for each.
  • 5. Clean up studio backgrounds Dust, seams and footprints on seamless paper, in a Lightroom to Photoshop and back workflow, with precise cutouts.
  • 6. Restore old photos Scratches, tears, dust and faded color on vintage prints, repainted and recolored.
  • 7. Choose AI or manual The 2024 comparison: where Generative Fill and Remove win, where they fail, and how to finish by hand.

Who This Path Is For

Travel, landscape, wedding and event photographers who cannot control what is in the frame, studio shooters who want clean backdrops, and anyone with a box of old family prints.

You should know layers and layer masks. Everything about removing things is taught here.

What You Need

  • Photoshop A current version; the last tutorial uses tools released in 2024.
  • Sample files Included for every tutorial, so you practice on the same images before your own.
  • Layers and masks Assumed knowledge. If not, start with the Getting Started in Photoshop & Lightroom.
  • Patience The hand-painted steps reward slowing down. A tablet helps but is not required.

For cutting a subject out and placing it on a new background, see the Cutouts & Backgrounds Learning Path.

How Long It Takes

Seven tutorials and 50 lessons, about 19 hours of video. How to Remove Anything is the longest at over six hours; the three-part object removal series is about an hour and a half each. At a few hours a week, plan on four to five weeks.

Keep a folder of your own photos with problems in them. Fix one after each tutorial, using only what that tutorial taught.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a PHLEARN PRO membership?

Yes. This is a PRO Learning Path, so all seven tutorials and their sample files are included with a membership.

Does Generative Fill make the manual tools unnecessary?

Not yet. It is the fastest first pass, but it invents detail, changes texture and fails on repeating patterns and skin. The last tutorial shows exactly when to switch to the manual tools taught in the first six.

Which tutorial is for old photos?

Step six. It builds on the Clone Stamp and healing techniques from steps one to four, so take those first.

Do I have to follow the order?

It is built to be followed in order, from the automatic tools to full repainting. If you are already comfortable with the healing tools, start at step three.

Are the 2018 and 2021 tutorials still accurate?

Yes. The Clone Stamp, Patch and healing tools have not changed. Step seven adds the 2024 AI tools on top of them.
