This path is built around that tension — it teaches the technical operations, then spends most of its time on judgement: how much, where, and when to stop. Ten tutorials take you from correcting a RAW file to building a composite portrait from scratch.

Who This Series Is For

Photographers who can take a good portrait but aren’t confident finishing one. If your retouching looks obviously retouched — smooth patches where pores should be, gray shadows under the eyes, skin that reads waxy at full size — the middle section of this path is written for exactly that problem.

It also serves people who retouch other people’s work. Several of these tutorials are about speed and repeatability rather than any single hero image, which is what separates a hobby edit from a deliverable set.

You need to know your way around layers and masks. You do not need to have done frequency separation before; it is taught from first principles, including why it works, so you can judge when it is the wrong tool.

What You Need

• Photoshop Any recent version. Adobe Camera RAW is included with it.
• A graphics tablet Helpful for dodging and burning, but not required — a mouse works for everything taught here.
• Sample files RAW files and PSDs are included, so you can work on the same images as the instructor.

A calibrated monitor matters more for portrait work than for most other genres, because skin tone errors are the ones viewers notice instinctively. If yours has never been calibrated, that is worth addressing before you judge your own color work.

How Long It Takes

Eight tutorials, several of them multi-hour. Most people work through this path over four to six weeks, doing one tutorial and then applying it to their own images before moving on.

That second half matters. Retouching is a motor skill as much as a knowledge one — watching someone dodge and burn a face teaches you the technique, but only doing it twenty times teaches you how far to push it.

Do I have to watch them in order?

The order is deliberate — correction, then retouching, then creative compositing — and each stage assumes the one before it. If you are already comfortable with RAW work you can start at the retouching tutorials, but the composite projects at the end genuinely build on the skin work.

Will this teach me to shoot portraits?

Only indirectly. This path is about editing. Understanding what you can and cannot fix afterwards does change how you shoot, but there is no lighting or posing instruction here.

Is frequency separation still the right technique?

For some jobs. It is covered thoroughly, along with its limitations and the situations where dodging and burning gives a better result. Knowing both, and knowing which to reach for, is the actual skill.

Do I need to shoot my own portraits to follow along?

No. Sample images are included with the tutorials, so you can practice the full workflow before applying it to your own portraits.
