PRO Photoshop Tutorial

In this advanced Photoshop Tutorial, we cover how to cut someone out of their bakground, reposition them, add body parts, blend them back into their background, and remove all distractions while we are at it, including an entire full length window. If that doesn’t sound awesome to you, chances are you have never tried to make someone float in a photo. You are going to learn about balancing a person’s pose to make them seem more natural, and how to transform the background to allow the person to interact with it.

Photo Shoot

This photo shoot was a ton of fun, and a bit scary. We are in an abandoned house, overgrown in the woods. Parts of the house are collapsing around us, and there is graffiti and broken glass everywhere. The concept was sketched out in depth before the shoot, so everyone knew what needed to happen. We decided to use the window light as a secondary light source, and a softbox as the main. If these lights are out of the shot, the can read the same as if a window were just outside of the frame.

Working with Light

There are a few great techniques that will allow light to look like it is spilling into a photo. This is a very popular look with photographers, as it gives a photo a lot more atmosphere. You can try to do this in camera, but often it is more effective to do it in Photoshop.

Learn How to Bring Your Subject Into Their Environment

When working with a concept such as this one, often it is very important to make a story, or at least have the photo make sense in some way. If you are going to be defying the laws of physics, that is ok, but you can’t ignore sense. For this photo in particular, I wanted the model’s hair to be very long, and supporting her. The hair has to come from SOMEWHERE. It would look silly just glued to the ceiling. For this you have a choice – do you attach it to something on the ceiling, or force the viewer to ask where it is going. Often times this can have a lot more impact. I decided to cut a hole in the ceiling, and pass the hair through it. You will learn how to do that too.

Removing Distractions

Often times, it is not about what you decide to include in a photo, it is what you decide to exclude. If you don’t have an option during your photo shoot due to your environment or other factors, you have no option but to remove them in Photoshop. This process can be very difficult if you haven’t learned the tricks on how to make it easy. As you can see below, we removed an entire full length window. This makes the image quite a bit more simple, and keeps the viewer’s eyes on the subject.

More I am quite new to the Phlearn Phamily (only about 2 weeks), but since I found Phlearn I haven't stopped. I've watched ever episode from the most current going back MONTHS and am still going. The wealth of knowledge within the free content has already lead me to purchases a couple Pro content just within the last week. The transparency of Phlearn coupled by the opportunity to free involved really does give this website/service a community feel.

Thanks for everything that the entire Phlearn team does and I'm happy to be a part of the Phamily.

More Phlearn is one of those exceptionally rare places where you can learn from someone (Aaron Nace) who is so good at what he does that he doesn't need to be teaching. But Aaron teaches because he loves to and he's a darn good teacher to boot.

The "PRO" tutorials on Phlearn over-deliver every time, sometimes reaching over 3 hours of pure content. These tutorials are vastly superior to anything available on any of the subscription learning sites or in any college.

The latest "PRO" tutorials have gotten scary good. It should be pointed out that only a hand full of people in the world can produce the level of work that Aaron does now. Naming these tutorials "PRO" is appropriate as he's a consummate pro at composite work rivaling photographers like Gary Land or Dave Hill.

Professionals like these aren't teaching their craft at any price. Yet through the Phlearn episodes, Aaron takes you by the hand and and gives you an education you can't get anywhere else (believe me I've looked).

More I have been a photographer for almost 12 years, currently in grad school and have yet to encounter tutorials that blow my mind like Phlearn's. I am addicted to downloading tutorials, even if it's material I have learned at the academy.

Aaron's easy to follow videos are perfect for serious artist. I am currently a finalist in Canon Project imagination because of the material I have learned on this site.

More Aaron Nace and his wonderful team at Phlearn are doing some amazing things for all of us.

They always come up with great and inspiring ideas and tutorials for us to learn from. Aaron is probably the best and funniest Photoshop Master on the internet right now.

I tell all of my friends about Phlearn because I know that the wealth of knowledge you will get from them will help you 10 fold.

More Thanks for putting out some of the most accessible, interesting, and informative tutorials on the web. I am simply in awe of your Photoshop knowledge and techniques. I've been a working landscape photographer since 2008 and I thought I knew my way around the program. How wrong I was! In every Phlearn tutorial I've watched I've learned one, or two, or ten new things about Photoshop. But I'm not just talking about tips, tricks, and shortcuts. Your techniques are fantastic as well. I had no idea you could accomplish so much with the simple brush tool.

But of course, technical Photoshop knowledge alone doesn't create great images. I've really gotten a lot out of hearing your theories and ideas on color and light matching for composites. It makes all the difference in the world. I can honestly say that even though I've only watched a handful of Phlearn tutes so far my portrait images are light years ahead of where they were only a few months ago.

Thanks much and keep up the great work.

More It doesn't matter if you’re new to Photoshop or if you've been using it for years Phlearn’s Pro tutorials will teach you something new and help you understand the how, when, why of using each technique taught.

I've been using Photoshop for more than 10 years and Phlearn’s Pro tutorial has been the absolute best learning resource I've encountered.

More PHLEARN is awesome!

First off, Aaron is a character. I've watched a lot of other photoshop tutorials, but Aaron keeps it entertaining, supportive, and positive. All of that is really important for creating a learning environment that has worked for me. It's weird - watching a PHLEARN PRO episode is super-entertaining. I might honestly watch them even if I wasn't trying to learn... but as Mary Poppins once said: a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down!

And does it ever! I've gone from being intimidated by Photoshop to feeling confident using the many different tools, techniques, and strategies that Aaron demonstrates. No, more than that - now I feel confident exploring and experimenting in Photoshop.

I want to thank Aaron and the rest of the crew at PHLEARN for what they are building, and how much they have already taught me. Thanks guys!

More Phlearn takes you step by step on each video going back of items so that you dont have to keep looking in a book. A friend first told me about Phlearn and he and I have told anyone we know about them at the time I was in a class on photography the instructor told all of us point blank that while we had to learn how to edit our own photos it that part of the class would be self study because she did not know how to use photoshop.

Using Phlearn I revamped their ideas with my own photos. I passed the class with an A. After the class I was asked by the instructor if I wanted to teach a photoshop class....My answer was Phlearn.com. I am told the photoshop part of the class has gotten a lot better then it was in my day all thanks to Phlearn.

More People generally dont like being wrong, even worse we dont like admitting we were wrong.

I had been watching Phlearn for about a month or so before I bought my first Pro Tutorial. I had learned and grown so much just from the free daily shows I felt like I was getting way to much for free so I decided i wanted to support Aaron by buying a tutorial. So i picked one that looked interesting, thinking that for the price i would maybe learn a few extra tricks that didn't happen to make it in the daily show (or had been done in the archives). I was wrong. Very wrong and I will happily admit it!

I still use what i learned in that first tutorial in a large portion of my images along with all the other tips and techniques I've learned in all the other tutorials I've purchased since. In fact, there isn't an image I've made recently that hasn't had a touch or more of Phlearn influence and i couldn't be more grateful. Phlearn continues to help me get my images to where I want them to be, and also shows me where I've never thought of taking them.

I really can't express how valuable these Pro Tutorials are, at any price!

More I've been a photographer for a long time and have been using Photoshop since its first incarnation. I thought I pretty much had it covered. Turns out, not so much. I'm pretty new to the site but I have learned so much from watching Aaron's free videos that it was a simple decision to purchase the PRO tutorials and I'm so glad I did. The quality of the production and level of content is awesome; in depth but clearly explained.

Aaron has such an easy, natural way of presenting information that you can't help but feel you're being personally tutored by someone who really knows and loves his craft.

Save your money on books, stop looking at 10 minute blurry Youtube clips and spend some time with PRO. You'll learn more from one PRO tutorial than you will from most books out there combined. Where can you possibly get between 2-3 hours of professional tutoring per video that you can refer to over and over again for under $25 (even cheaper when he has a sale)? 'Nuff said.
