PRO Photoshop Tutorial

In this advanced Photoshop Tutorial, we cover how to cut someone out of their bakground, reposition them, add body parts, blend them back into their background, and remove all distractions while we are at it, including an entire full length window. If that doesn’t sound awesome to you, chances are you have never tried to make someone float in a photo. You are going to learn about balancing a person’s pose to make them seem more natural, and how to transform the background to allow the person to interact with it.

Photo Shoot

This photo shoot was a ton of fun, and a bit scary. We are in an abandoned house, overgrown in the woods. Parts of the house are collapsing around us, and there is graffiti and broken glass everywhere. The concept was sketched out in depth before the shoot, so everyone knew what needed to happen. We decided to use the window light as a secondary light source, and a softbox as the main. If these lights are out of the shot, the can read the same as if a window were just outside of the frame.

Working with Light

There are a few great techniques that will allow light to look like it is spilling into a photo. This is a very popular look with photographers, as it gives a photo a lot more atmosphere. You can try to do this in camera, but often it is more effective to do it in Photoshop.

Learn How to Bring Your Subject Into Their Environment

When working with a concept such as this one, often it is very important to make a story, or at least have the photo make sense in some way. If you are going to be defying the laws of physics, that is ok, but you can’t ignore sense. For this photo in particular, I wanted the model’s hair to be very long, and supporting her. The hair has to come from SOMEWHERE. It would look silly just glued to the ceiling. For this you have a choice – do you attach it to something on the ceiling, or force the viewer to ask where it is going. Often times this can have a lot more impact. I decided to cut a hole in the ceiling, and pass the hair through it. You will learn how to do that too.

Removing Distractions

Often times, it is not about what you decide to include in a photo, it is what you decide to exclude. If you don’t have an option during your photo shoot due to your environment or other factors, you have no option but to remove them in Photoshop. This process can be very difficult if you haven’t learned the tricks on how to make it easy. As you can see below, we removed an entire full length window. This makes the image quite a bit more simple, and keeps the viewer’s eyes on the subject.

More Hi, my name is Jandrie, and I am a phlearnoholic. I have downloaded a total of 30 Phlearn pro's, and every single one of them has been great. They go into detail, from start to finish. They don't only show the cool things, but also take you through the less exciting bits of making a great image. I have learned to take my time, and think about the image, does the image make sense.

The Pro Tutorials also showed me what was possible in photoshop, which is very handy when doing a shoot, so you know what you can fix afterwards. It also shows a great attention to detail. Since watching phlearn, my images have improved out of sight, and it's all down to Aaron and the team. I would say it's almost like having an unfair advantage. I can thoroughly recommend Phlearn PRO.

More I appreciate the quality/thoroughness of the pro tutorials here at Phlearn. They are a phenomenal value for the money. I should know -- so far I've purchased 11 of them.

I've purchased many photoshop tutorials and PHLEARN is (in my opinion), are the best value for the money by FAR.Love the entire Phlearn site as well. If there is time in my day to only check out one site, It’s going to be PHLEARN.

Thanks to you and your team for all you do!

More I've been experimenting with Photoshop for 4 or more years now, and I found myself constantly using the same techniques which did not help me progress and did not make my photos look too realistic. After coming across Phlearn, joining the daily discussions in the episodes and getting a Phlearn Pro video, I realized how much more there is to Photoshop. The episodes opened my eyes to new ways of editing a picture and making it stand out. Aaron covers absolutely everything there is to know about the program!

The Flood Pro episode that I have purchased showed me the process of making an image (explanation of the light sources was very helpful), as well as the post production. I learned how to make the model look perfect yet natural, I learned about making a composite and how to create a mood for the picture, as well as many more ways of creating a photograph that I still use today.

I highly recommend getting a Phlearn Pro to anyone who is interested in taking their creativity to the next level!

More I have a lot of PRO tutorials, and they are all fantastic. The basic phlearn is great, but in the PRO tutorials Aaron goes much more in depth. In addition, in the PRO tutorials you can understand how to create a quality photo from the beginning to the end, and this allows also to understand the creative concept that there is behind all.

Some great skills in photoshop are explained and can be therefore applied to your shots. In one year, thanks to basic phlearn, but much more thanks to the PRO tutorials I bought, I reached a level in photoshop which I would have never thought I would have reached. :)

More I am from Mexico, i found out about Phlearn watching the [Framed] show staring Aaron Nace. What attracted me to the site was the creativity he injects in his projects. Actually, i was looking for something like that, a way to create cool ideas and translate them to a story through photography, and that's what i feel Aaron does with his work.

Also, i was looking for a tutorial on how to enhance skin dodge and burning, so i decided to buy the tutorial here. I found it very useful because it encourage you to use your hands to paing... almost literaly, paint with a tablet. So, so far, Phlearn is a site that i stop bye every day.

Keep the good work!!!

More Aaron and the whole Phlearn Phamily have helped me break out the the rut of doing the same thing over and over again. It had gotten so bad that I was not even opening Photoshop anymore and I was just using lightroom. Phlearn has helped me re-discover Photoshop and have the confidence to explore new techniques that I would not have done prior to discovering Phlearn. Thanks Aaron and everyone at Phlearn!

More Phlearn is one of those exceptionally rare places where you can learn from someone (Aaron Nace) who is so good at what he does that he doesn't need to be teaching. But Aaron teaches because he loves to and he's a darn good teacher to boot.

The "PRO" tutorials on Phlearn over-deliver every time, sometimes reaching over 3 hours of pure content. These tutorials are vastly superior to anything available on any of the subscription learning sites or in any college.

The latest "PRO" tutorials have gotten scary good. It should be pointed out that only a hand full of people in the world can produce the level of work that Aaron does now. Naming these tutorials "PRO" is appropriate as he's a consummate pro at composite work rivaling photographers like Gary Land or Dave Hill.

Professionals like these aren't teaching their craft at any price. Yet through the Phlearn episodes, Aaron takes you by the hand and and gives you an education you can't get anywhere else (believe me I've looked).

More People generally dont like being wrong, even worse we dont like admitting we were wrong.

I had been watching Phlearn for about a month or so before I bought my first Pro Tutorial. I had learned and grown so much just from the free daily shows I felt like I was getting way to much for free so I decided i wanted to support Aaron by buying a tutorial. So i picked one that looked interesting, thinking that for the price i would maybe learn a few extra tricks that didn't happen to make it in the daily show (or had been done in the archives). I was wrong. Very wrong and I will happily admit it!

I still use what i learned in that first tutorial in a large portion of my images along with all the other tips and techniques I've learned in all the other tutorials I've purchased since. In fact, there isn't an image I've made recently that hasn't had a touch or more of Phlearn influence and i couldn't be more grateful. Phlearn continues to help me get my images to where I want them to be, and also shows me where I've never thought of taking them.

I really can't express how valuable these Pro Tutorials are, at any price!
