Next-Level Edits

The latest updates to Lightroom Classic bring two powerful and user-friendly AI tools: Lens Blur and AI Denoise. These features are designed to simplify complex editing tasks, helping photographers quickly achieve professional results. Whether you need to make your subject stand out with a beautiful blurred background or clean up grain from a low-light shot, these AI tools make your editing process significantly faster and more intuitive.

Applying Lens Blur

The new Lens Blur tool uses AI to detect your subject and realistically blur the background, mimicking a high-end camera lens effect.

1. Go to the Develop module.
2. On the right-hand panel, find and open the Lens Blur category.
3. Click Apply. The AI will analyze the image and automatically blur the background.
4. Adjust the Blur Amount slider for subtlety (the host recommends keeping it subtle for a realistic look).
5. Refine the look using Bokeh options (e.g., Circular, Cat Eye) and adjust the Focus Range slider manually or by using the target icon to draw a rectangle around your subject.
6. Optional: If you previously used Generative AI to remove objects from the background, the Lens Blur will apply flawlessly over the retouched area.
7. Hit / (slash) to quickly see the Before and After views.

Removing Noise

The AI Denoise feature is a straightforward tool that completely removes noise, especially useful for high-ISO raw photographs shot in low light.

1. Navigate to the Develop module.
2. Scroll down the right-hand panel to the Detail category.
3. Click on the Denoise option. It will process the image using AI, removing all visible noise while preserving image detail.
4. You can adjust the strength of the effect using the Amount slider within the Denoise dialog box to balance noise reduction with image fidelity.

Keep in mind that, currently, this feature works with raw photographs only, but support for JPEGs is planned for the future.

Final Thoughts

Both tools offer features to help you refine the final result for maximum control and realism.

Lens Blur Visualization: Within the Lens Blur panel, click Visualize Depth to see a grayscale overlay of your image, showing what the AI has determined should be in focus versus out of focus.

Brush Refinement: In the Lens Blur panel, expand Brush Refinement to manually paint areas you want to be more in focus or more blurred. This is especially useful for cleaning up subtle edges around your subject, like hair. To refine edges, reduce the Flow and Amount of the brush before painting.
