description
Resizing a small image just stretches the pixels it already has, which is why upscaled files look soft or blocky. This Quick Tip routes a low-resolution JPEG through Camera Raw, where the Enhance feature (also known as Super Resolution) doubles its resolution by generating new detail, and covers when repeating the pass starts doing more harm than good.

How to Turn a Low-Res Image into a High-Res Image in Photoshop
This Quick Tip upscales a low-resolution JPEG using Camera Raw’s Enhance feature, routing the image through Camera Raw first so its Super Resolution option becomes available.
Setting Photoshop to Auto-Open JPEGs in Camera Raw
Going to Edit, then Preferences, then Camera Raw opens Camera Raw’s preference panel, where Photoshop can be set to automatically open all supported JPEGs through Camera Raw instead of straight into the main Photoshop workspace.
Why This Setting Matters Here
The Enhance feature used later in this process lives inside Camera Raw, so a JPEG needs to pass through Camera Raw first before that option becomes available at all.
Opening the Image in Photoshop
With that preference set, opening the low-resolution image in Photoshop now routes it through Camera Raw automatically, rather than requiring it to be opened through Camera Raw manually each time.
Running Enhance from the Right-Click Menu
Right-clicking on the image and choosing Enhance runs Camera Raw’s Enhance process on it, which rebuilds the image at a higher resolution using detail the tool generates rather than simply stretching the existing pixels.
A Right-Click Away, Not a Menu Search
Reaching Enhance through the right-click context menu directly on the image skips hunting through Camera Raw’s menus, keeping the whole upscale to just a couple of clicks once the preference above is set.
What Enhance Actually Does
Running Enhance doubles the image’s resolution, and this same underlying feature is also known as Super Resolution inside Camera Raw, a popular method for the same kind of upscale.
Exporting and Repeating for More Resolution
Exporting the enhanced result as a new JPEG and running it back through the same process again repeats the resolution doubling, building up an even larger final image than a single Enhance pass alone.
Diminishing Returns on Repeated Passes
Since each pass generates its detail rather than capturing it from an original high-resolution source, repeating the process too many times starts adding a noticeably synthetic, over-smoothed look rather than genuine extra sharpness.

Why This Technique Works
A plain resize just stretches existing pixels, which is exactly what makes an upscaled low-resolution image look soft or blocky. Camera Raw’s Enhance feature generates new detail rather than stretching what’s already there, which is why it can genuinely improve a small file instead of just making it bigger.
Final Thoughts
Turning a low-resolution JPEG into a usable high-resolution image comes down to routing it through Camera Raw and running Enhance, doubling its resolution with generated detail rather than a simple stretch, and repeating the process only as many times as the image can take before it starts looking artificially smoothed.
